Hello everyone,

I will be applying next year and have been desperately calling MDs to see if I can shadow them and almost every single one says that I cant because of patient privacy! They say that I must be a resident or licensed!

If you live in CA or just know of any MDs anywhere in southern California, near the LA area ( I will drive far if I have to ) that will let me shadow them please help! You can reply here or leave me a message. Any general advice as to how to find an MD to shadow in my area would be greatly appreciated! Also any DOs I can shadow will be great as well since I will apply both DO and MD.

Thanks!

Dude, I had the same troubles. Just type in "xx doctor, your town" in google and call call call till someone says yes. It took me probably about 30 failures to find two doctors.

I was extremely lucky in having the first doctor I asked say yes, but everyone after said no. You're in LA? What I did was looked at the list of clinical professors at Geffen/UCLA and emailed/called those who had interests similar to mine. I figured since they're professors they'd be more open to having people observe. Don't bother asking the ER docs at the UCLA hospital, though...their privacy policy says that only students in some program can shadow in the ER.

Yeah I was thinking about calling professors from med schools. Thanks for the advice! Is anyone no longer shadowing an MD (because they already have enough hours, etc.) that maybe you can give me their contact info so I can get some hours done? Anymore advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!

Oh BTW I live about 20 min from LA and UCLA is about 40 miles away from me but I don't care I will drive that far if I can find an MD to shadow!

Have you considered Los angeles county+USC collegiate medical volunteer program (LAC+USC CMV Program)

You know I had never heard of that program before today and I wish I had earlier! I am in the Clinical Care Extender program which is almost exactly like this program except that there is no shadowing of MDs only PAs! By the time I am done I will have 240+ hours. I don't think I will be allowed to be in both???

I really appreciate all the help guys!

Please if anyone does know of a doctor (MD or DO) I can shadow I would REALLY, REALLY appreciate it!

Thanks!

You don't need to shadow a MD. Just find a doctor is okay. I personally shadowed two DPM (I'm to crazy to find a MD in my area) and I am still fine.
