Hi everyone,

I am curious to know if it is a normal practice by schools to place you with a different healthcare professional (i.e. psychologist, psychiatrist, nurse, etc) and NOT an OT during your Level I Fieldwork?

I am about to start my Level I Fieldwork and I was wondering if all schools do this? Or do other schools pair up their students with actual OTs during Level I Fieldwork.

Thanks!

Are you at Stanbridge College? I attended their info session and remember their fieldwork coordinator stating that she "tries her best" to place students with OT's during level 1 fieldwork but that it most likely will be with another type of health practitioner. I thought this was odd. She tried to play it off as "any type of healthcare exposure in fieldwork is great since OT can be applied to all settings". I wasn't too excited about this point. I'd also like to hear from others if this is a normal practice for level 1 fieldwork. I will be starting an OT program in the fall but am still undecided about which school.

For my psychosocial fieldwork I, I didn't have an OT at my site. Only 2 people in my cohort were placed with OTs. However, for our other 2 level Is (peds and phys dis) we will all be placed with OTs.

It's the same at my program. Some are placed with OTs, but not everyone. I think it speaks to the fact that there aren't as many OTs in mental health.

The purpone of Level I is to gain experience and understand the needs of the demographic. Having an OT supervisor will enhance your knowledge with relevant applications but it's not required. We were even instructed to address whether or not we personally feel like OT has a role in each setting.

Level 1B site was at a drug addiction center. No OTs-but one was on staff and talked over the phone. I think that is how it is.

Level 1A was straight OT.

I'm at CSUDH, and everyone in my Cohort had an OT supervisor for their level 1 fieldworks.
