Hi everybody,

I am 19 years old right now and after much consideration for my future career I have decided that I want to be a school/child psychologist.

I have had so many different experiences in my life including moving from England to California. I judge myself as very easy to talk to and I am very down to earth and I would like to help and give something back to the community with all the different good and very bad experiences I have had. I loved psychology the year I took AP Psychology in high school and I have been hooked as I find it so interesting. (I passed the AP test too 🙂 )

I am currently attending a community college in southern california to complete my general education then I will be transferring out to a 4 year school.

With school psychology in mind, I am aware I will need a master's degree for this without a doubt.

Can anybody recommend me good CAL State or UC schools? Is anybody aware of UC Davis' psychology program?

Thanks so much!

For school psychology, you will probably want to get at least a specialist degree (in between an MS and PhD), it seems to be the requirement in many states now.

I don't know anything about CA schools, so I'l defer to others....but you may want to look at specialist and PhD programs in school psych. There is definitely a need in the area.

Thanks for the response.

I was doing some quick research and the Ed.S looks like it would be right for me because it goes further than the Masters, but does not persue as far as a doctorate degree.

The SSP is the other alternative, but because I want to deal with schools, the Ed.S would be more suitable.

Would it be correct in saying that once I have my masters, try to get a job as a school psychologist while I am doing my Ed.S then once I have finished that go to another school for more money? My ex-stepmom was a child psychologist at a school with only a masters degree (before she went crazy mind you (serious) )

So much schooling! Well I am sure it will pay off in the end. Effort does not go unrewarded as long as I have the will to keep going.

Definitely need suggestions for the school though because I need to plan my courses now. As I am at community college, I want to get all the comparable+transferrable courses now while they are cheap. Although 17 units right now is pushing it!
