We all get this question:

So why do you want to come to Ohio for med school?
Connecticut?
New Hampshire?
Vermont?
St. Louis?
Milwaukee?

What's the best interview answer?

"Because your medical program is here."

(because let's be honest, we would all go to UCSF or UCLA or UCSD if we could. Better in probably every facet of life.) 😛

It's a stupid question but we gotta answer it somehow...

It's a stupid question, imo, but...

UCSD and UCSF didn't have the chemistry I wanted to do when I was looking into graduate programs.

Because I want exposure to both urban and rural practice settings and I feel that your school's location would be a great fit towards this aim.

Pretty much! I'm not too excited about any location outside of California. It's all so cold and flat and gray.

😉

yep.. the more I interview out of state, the more I want to stay in CA.

My interview at Buffalo:

Interviewer: Coming from CA, why do you want to live in Buffalo?
Me: I'm really excited about your school!
Interviewer: I mean aside from the medical program, why would you want to live in Buffalo?"
Me: uhhhh herp derp.... I like to ski!

Result: waitlisted.

if it makes you feel better, most people are waitlisted

Like, what are we supposed to say?!

I'm mind=blown by this

hahahahah 🤣
I love this thread.
"Why do you want to go to this school here?"
"Actually, I want to go to this school, but not here. Can you move it to CA instead, kthnx."

I've lived other places besides the golden CA, so I wouldn't mind venturing again. Though I definitely wouldn't mind staying 😛

everyone has their preference, and there aint nothing wrong with that. I personally would love to go to medical school in manhattan (Columbia, Cornell, NYU, MSSM) but wouldn't turn down a school like Harvard becuase it's in that annoying city called Boston.... 🙂

I agree, except for LA. California>>>most other places>>>Topeka>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>LA

When I was in manhattan, I was like "damn.. I always dreamed of having a beach-front house in laguna, but I think I would rather a flat in manhattan".

I still believe this.

Also, this is coming from someone who practically spends all the available free time doing various water sports at the beach - there is just something majestic about the place!

You could always just lie about something harmless like, "I have family in the area/state/here in the middle of nowhere". Is it a lie? Sure. But so would making up any other reason why you want to leave CA if you really don't want to.

I'm planning on doing this for the 2 OOS schools I'm interviewing at. But make sure you're thorough - know where your fake relatives live, what they do for a living, etc. Also mention that you visit them a lot.

Do some research on the area prior to interview. Find out what that general location is good for.

As an example....since I am originally from Ohio. (aka that cold gray place )

They say why do you want to live in Ohio? A couple things in Ohio could be used. Maybe you claim to also have a love for the arts and the diverse creative community within cleveland is inspiring. You are impressed with the rock & roll hall of fame because it delivers such a historically accurate representation of music throughout the ages and the science museum next to it is a beautiful place to study as you sit by the Lake. Then you mention the talented musicians that come through ohio on such a frequent basis and the art galleries which are inspiring.

If you have a family maybe you say I picked New Hampshire because it is such a family oriented area....or mention that the economy of one area is on an upward trend and it has many diverse opportunities.

I don't know, I just pulled that out of my 😱. You get the point though, research the area, show that you are well rounded.

Why not live in a new place? Learn something new about the people, area, etc.

I'm not a CA resident, but I agree that there's something to be said for living in a variety of locations. I grew up in a big city and went to undergrad in a small, Western town. I think it's been a fantastic experience. Really gives you another perspective on things.

"So, rofl, why do you want to move to Milwaukee?"

Well having been raised in SF, then moving to Pasadena for college and now working in Santa Barbara I feel that Milwaukee will really provide a new experience that I've been unable to see thus far...I can't wait to be in Cleveland! err...Kentucky...errr where the 😱 am I?
