I have an interview at Wash U in about 4 weeks. Since I'm from the west coast, I would like to combine this trip with one to Chicago to interview at Northwestern and Loyola. I've been complete at both for about a month, so should I call and say I'm going to be "in the area?"
I don't want to come off as being pushy, but I would rather not spend the extra money and travel time if I don't have to...

Ummm I guess that would work but keep in mind Wash U is a 6 hour drive from Chicago still 🙂

Good luck with Northwestern. I was in the Midwest twice this past month to interview at Michigan and U of Chicago, and called NW on both occasions to see if they were gonna offer me an interview--and if they could coordinate it.... Stonewalled both times: under review.

yeah considering how far away washu is from chicago, i dont see how they'd be that accomodating. that said, it wouldnt hurt to try.

the drive is ~5 hours, but a flight is only 30 min. to me, that's "in the area"

Yea, I would definately be flying between St. Louis and Chicago. It's pretty cheap to add an extra leg to a flight (well, cheaper than 2 RT flights anyway).

Anyone else have any luck with Northwestern/Loyola coordination?

Here's a trick. If you are dirt poor, you can take Amtrak train from StL to Chicago for $24! it's a 5 hour ride but you don't have to worry about parking etc like you would at an airport. It goes to the heart of downtown Chicago. It's somewhat compareable if you take into account the lines at the aiport because for some reason, the train is actually on-time, go figure. Just take a cab to the train station in StL.

Anyhow, that's my two cents.

I would definitely recommend giving Loyola a ring. They hooked me up for an interview when I was going to be in the area...it was a pretty sweet deal. They asked for written documentation though, saying that I'd be in the area on such-and-such dates, etc. 😉

You are going to waste 100-120 bucks if you fly to Chicago. The St.Louis to Chicago drive can be done in about 4.5 to 5 hours. Sure the drive is boring but still ...

Imagine that you have to be in the airport 1.5 hours before the flight and you are going to waste a good 1 hour after you land.

Amtrak is the other great option. There are 2 stations in St.Louis.

Btw if you still want to fly i would suggest flying Southwest as Midway is far more convenient.
