What is call like for an anesthesiologist? What is your avg night like? Does it differ in private practice vs residency?

I don't think there is an average night.

I've had nights where I leave the hospital a 6 pm, and not get a single call for ANYTHING.

Recently, I had a night where I did cases non-stop until the next day when the day crew showed up.

But overall, it's more the former and not the latter.

Is call done from home or do you have to stay in the hospital till you shift is done? When you say that you do cases all night long, do you mean that your handling a lot of trauma surgery/late night surgery or is it more of an epidural or 2 for the ob/gyn ward

It varies. My hospital does not require us to stay in house....so I leave when stuff is done.

We are not a trauma center...so it was appys, broken legs, etc....

it's different everywhere....my answers won't mean much for anyone else.

It depends where you are at. I worked at tampa general hospital and my calls were horrible. Start at 7am and leave the next day after you start you rooms and someone relieves you.
Average night- 5 to 6 traumas a night, usually ortho, but sometimes gunshots or stabbings. 10 add ons a night, almost always urgent chole's?? and the leftover's from the day shift. 5-6 code blues, 10 epidurals, 3-6 c-section's and the consults for central lines which is around 5-6 per night.

Private vs Residency- Again depends if you have a trauma center. I worked with residents at TGH but it still sucked ass. I am currently at a different program in Texas and calls are sweet. Start at 3pm and your off at 7 am no questions asked. No central lines consults, min if any trauma, a few cases left over from the day 2 to 3 and occasional stat intubations. Again, depends the hospital that you at. The current hospital I am at is much smaller than Tampa general and the catch area for patients is also smaller.

Soooo....important question is....which job pays better....the one with the terrible call or the one with the good call.
