Although I feel more comfortable asking my professors in person (their facial expression when I ask is pretty important imo), I live on the opposite coast of my school and won't return until late august. I also wanted to wait until after finals to make sure I got an awesome grade in the class before asking him...

at this point, is it better to call or email about a letter?

I first called and then e-mailed all of my letter writers.

Why don't you ask through email first? If the professor says yes, then arrange a time you can talk to him on the phone.

I'd suggest using your best judgment. You know much more about this professor's preferred method of communication than SDN.

Hey, I am potentially going through the same thing with one of my professors. I first emailed him about simply coming in to speak with him, but unfortunately the class I took with him doesn't exist anymore, so he is unavailable on campus. After hearing this, I replied with an apology for the informality of asking via email if he would write a LOR on my behalf for medical school. I was trying to be polite.

Hope this helps. Bests.

[Edited: P.S. Not sure if it means anything, but he said it's no problem and to send him all my information via email. Oh, how sweet email is.]
