Calling all 2007M1's: what are you doing for the next 2 months?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm catching up on all the tv watching I've been missing for the past 4 years. I'll worry about all the other stuff 2 weeks before school starts.

working...as in a job-->$$

Well, I'm at an early start school, so I start this Tuesday!!! I would get all financial aid squared away ASAP and get all your doc appts and shots/bloodwork done soon too. It's amazing how easily that stuff gets lost or takes three times as long as it should. Other than that, maybe shop for some scrubs on sale for anat lab, and spend time with friends and family.

OMG where are you going to school?

as for me, in the lab and teaching MCAT classes. Also trying to workout, figure out living situation, etc....

I'm trying to get everything as stable as it possible can (car, misc debts, etc), but what else should I be doing?

Start reading everything you can about medical school, I'd say. I mean, obviously, take it easy and don't stress yourself about it one bit, but it'd be nice to get a humanistic leg up on the whole matter. I'm not suggesting that you read an anatomy book.

Instead, try Jerome Groopman's How Doctors Think, for example.

Another potential alternative is to travel, since this will be one of our final summers as young adults. I think the next free one is between first and second year, and the one after that is six years later.

Go see the world. Pay for it later (within reason, people!).

Doing nothing for about the next 7 weeks (well, aside from getting housing and financial aid squared away) and then going on a Meditteranean cruise with my family.

If we did want to read anatomy, what should we read?

f & f. gotta be friends and family

best summer ever : 4 months long. spending time writing a book (it's on page 100 now), watching movies (rent about 5 a week), looking for a condo in chicago, trip to hawaii in a few months, possible trip to africa, some med school reading ie b/c i have to in order to be able to tutor bio, and finally tutoring 9 hrs/wk for 2 months w/ ridiculous benefits/reimbursement. hey i just realized most of you only have 2 months of summer, bummer.

oh and for the person starting on tuesday, have fun at FSU! one of my good friends is going there and i'm sure you'll love her.

work during the week, lots of weekend traveling trips, getting as much sun/beach/pooltime as possible, working out, goin to pubs for sports games(go pistons!!!), and just about anything else with friends and family cause i'll be moving 1500 miles away and i want to get in as much fun as possible.

Where in Africa and through what program, or going solo? How's the market in Chicago?

You shouldn't. Every year MS0s ignore the advice on this kind of thread (a search would reveal dozens of the same) and try and study anyway, and every subsequent year many of those same people come back and tell the next generation not to bother. It's an endless cycle of ignoring good advice. So do whatever you want. It will not help as much as using the time to relax and reenergize would.

I'm going to the Virgin Islands 👍
I'm going to study anatomy down there if you know what I mean....😀

I find it pretty hilarious that people will be studying anatomy this summer. Do you really wanna burn out by August?
😆

as for books, I started reading How Doctor's think. It's incredibly interesting, and I definitely recommend it to anyone going into the medical profession as well as anyone else. The only drawback is that his writing style is kinda boring (ie he's not an author). Basically just a ton of really cool vignettes.

I am also reading Stiff by Mary Roach. Very cool book about cadavers and their impact on society (medical field, car crash tests, etc). It's also witty and funny, but it isn't disrespectful (at least I didn't find it to be disrespectful).

Spending the summer primarily playing PC games - counter strike and any new dx10 games that come out.

When my hand hurts after hours of playing video games I'll watch some HD-DVDs that have come in (thank you free month of netflix!).

Then go work out a couple of times a week. Sitting on the lazy boy (sp?) I found isn't the best for days on end.

When I'm really bored, I'll look at my ETF portfolio and move things around after I tell myself - no I'm a long term investor 😀

Nigeria. to visit family friends, etc. It's not through any program. My dad is giving some medical lectures there (he goes about 4 times a year) and its time to go again. The market in chicago is depressing, everywhere i find something relatively reasonable someone tells me that the area is unsafe and not to live there. so i've almost given up....i think i'm gonna live in an apartment where a lot of the med students live for my first year at least.

Working, Working Out, Boozing with my buddies, reading (fiction books), catching up on Sopranos and Entourage.

Eating, working out, writing a book, playing video games, watching movies, and hanging with buds.

I loved Stiff! Someone told me there was a sequel, but I haven't seen it.

I'm working as a temp for a little extra $$, reading for pleasure, watching stupid tv (simpsons right now, tehehe), and drinking as much as possible.

Speaking of drinking, i love your avatar! I spent last summer in Belgium and I miss the beer soooo much.

ooo a sequel! sounds awesome. I just found out that Khaled Husseini (sp?) has a new book out. He's the guy that wrote Kite Runner. If anyone hasn't read that yet, I highly recommend it. I am not ashamed to admit that I was seriously tearing up while reading it. Yes, I am a guy and I cried. Best book ever. I forget what his new book is called, but I may read that.

As far as beer, Belgian is the best. I think it blows German beer out of the water. I was in Belgium three years ago, and I had a blast. Bruges was the most beautiful small cities that I've ever been to. Did you go to Bruges? Brussels was nice too. I liked how the streets smelled like waffles from all the vendors (and how waffles is made to be a dessert). I also loved le mannequin pis. I bought a corkscrew in the shape of the statue ... with the screw part being ... (well you know)

Also, congrats on UVA med. I was there for undergrad (didnt accept me to med though). I love Charlottesville. It looks like I am going to EVMS ... unless I hear something from Penn State.

Kite Runner is a great book. 👍

I've been on a Belgian beer binge for the past 6 months... great stuff.

Oh his new book is called "A Thousand Splendid Suns."
Like Kite Runner its set in War-torn Afghanistan. I haven't read it, but supposedly its "doesn't disappoint."
Anyways, if its half as good as Kite Runner its still worth reading.

I HAVE THAT CORKSCREW TOO! but it kinda broke though from overuse in Italy later that summer. I still kept the pieces though, and sent mannequin pis postcards to all my friends at home because I thought it was hilarious. I loved Bruges! It was so picturesque, I felt like everywhere I looked should be a postcard. I stayed in a really little town about an hour south of Brussels called Louvain-la-neuve and oh how I miss sitting in the town square drinking ciney blonde or duvel or if i'm feeling girly mort subite peche out of a classy glass ::sigh::

Kite Runner is on my list of books to read this summer. Everyone I know who's read it say it's amazing, but right now I'm slumming it with Jude Deveraux.

congrats on EVMS and good luck waiting for Penn!

sorry to everyone else for hijacking this thread 😳

Getting married (in 3 weeks!), going on the honeymoon, working (for the money and also cause I love my job, it's at a hospital doing clinical research, so lots of patient contact), playing with my puppy, reading books for fun and kah-nowledge, spending time with my family...

Going to Africa. Flying though Morocco and spending a few days and the rest of the time in Mali.

Is WaWa national or just localized on the East Coast?

Sheetz destroys Wawa. Take that Philadelphia!

According to their website they just have stores in 5 east coast states.

Unfortunately this is probably true 🙁 I'm going to miss Wawa at UVA!

And as far as the Wawa vs Sheetz debtate, don't even get me started... Have you tasted Sheetz coffee?!? Bleh

I don't normally post but I had to join the Wawa debate....I LOVE THAT PLACE!!! Oh and I guess I should add what I'm doing this summer since I'm a 2007 MS1...i'm going to hang out...work out....hopefully get a free trip to europe (i need all the good vibes beamed to me to pull this off) and then going to vegas/LA the week before i have to report to the fun time that we all call med school 😀

Wawa rules. 🙂

This summer I'll be going on family vacation, reading the new Harry Potter, hanging out with friends and doing some traveling to visit people. Plus the not-so-fun task of moving all my stuff...

We had a Wawa by my school in Williamsburg, VA. I don't know about UVA, but there are Wawa's in VA.

  • Selling the years of accumulated crap in my garage on Ebay
  • Watching movies (thank you Blockbuster Online!)
  • Slowly getting stuff ready for my apartment
  • Exercising daily and trying to get my blood pressure and waistline down (gotta compete with the yungin's in med school, lol)
  • Looking for a good tablet pc
  • Going to Disney World as much as I can before my season pass runs out and the summer crowds arrive.
  • Working at school as histology TA to earn a little $ to pay the bills.
  • Brushing up on my Spanish
  • Learning to play the guitar
  • Still volunteering at the Emergency Dept/Trauma center

Just think of it as getting gross anatomy out of the way before the hard science classes start in the fall. It's not a Caribbean cruise or a trip to Europe, but it'll make your life easier later on. Good luck with first year! 🙂:luck:

going to London...than Morocco...Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Germany, and than back to France....should be a great summer ;-)

Wow, I wish I could go on a trip like that! Have a wonderful time and take lots of pictures/videos! Eat, drink, and have lots of fun! :hardy:

Hey - On the tabby - I'm waitin to get x61 thinkpad

Quitting work Thursday (3 days!)

Leaving next Monday for a month long trip to Europe--London, Paris, Barcelona, Cinque Terra, Florence, Rome, relatives..

Move into my apartment

Start school mid July...

read last Harry Potter book

-Sky-diving

-Working two free-lance jobs

-working out

-light study (keeping involved with some medical things just to keep fired up), reading some journal articles

-spending as much time with friends and family as possible

-drinking

Finishing up some summer classes, volunteering at the blood bank, trip to San Diego, catching up on 5 seasons of scrubs (yay netflix), watching TV, getting a tan and sipping lemonade, hanging out with my family and friends

I'm doing research (so that I can have $$$), trying to find a car, getting any missing shots, trying to figure out how I'm going to buy furniture once I get to the new city (I have none), and spending as much time with friends/fam before I have to leave again...oh yes, and fattening up on homecooked meals. 😀

Thank goodness the apartment thing is already taken care of so I just have to figure out the rest.

My plans for the next two months -

  • Get confirmed child care. This is stressing me out. My kids have been on the waiting list at my top choice daycare since October. They said the wait would only be a few months for them to be at the top of the list. My 2 year old is at the top but my 4 year old still has several kids in front of her. 🙁
  • Finish vaccines/titers/PPD - I think I can get my next HepB shot in a few weeks
  • Go on some sort of vacation. I'm planning a weekend away with my friend but I'd also like to go somewhere relaxing with my husband and kids for a few days.
That's it. There's really not too much to get done before school starts thank goodness.

Relaxing and clearing my mind, for one thing! As well as trying to spend a lot of quality time with friends, have fun, etc 🙂 And working some... at a very slacker-ish job: lifeguarding. I figure taking a "break" before heading in would be a good way to be as fresh as possible before starting!

Quitting my job so I can go back to the motherland (Pakistan) for two months and coming back 5 days before orientation at OHSU.

And stressing out a little bit about how I will manage to get all my paperwork for loans and such squared away from halfway across the world. And find a place to live in time. Other than that, it's all good.

My plan is the same as most people's:

- Quit my job
- Tan, swim, dive, and hang out at the beach while I still can
- Establish a workout schedule
- Read the new Harry Potter
- Eat as much of my mom's cooking as I possibly can
- Drink and party
- Move all of my stuff across the country

I'm also going to Hawaii some time in July.
