Calling dental schools..?

Is it ever bad to call dental schools to ask about my application?
I submitted most of my apps early/mid July and haven't heard back from most of them
(although not many because I only applied to about 8 schools)
but haven't gotten any interviews but 1 when I thought I was a decent application
(higher than average scores)

what do you guys think?
