Hello!

I'm stressed about the ROL submission and calling PD's to say they're ranked very highly---basically, I've put this off as I'm not sure about my #1---two programs are vying for this and I felt weird about calling not knowing for sure exactly. Does anyone have any advice on this? Do most people call their top programs? I've emailed my top 5, but haven't made personal phone calls yet. Perhaps it's just too late, anyway. :scared:

Any input would be very appreciated!

It is a little late, although I would be surprised if there aren't any program directors out there who are finalizing their rank lists at the last minute.

There is no data on whether applicants are calling, e-mailing, or sending written letters/cards/notes to the directors of their top-choice programs, but I would guess that most applicants do not call. If you have already sent electronic or written correspondence, please do not call.

It's okay to be scared/terrified/desperate. This is a stressful time for most applicants.
Just keep it to yourself. One e-mail is enough.

I emailed. Calling seems awkward -- omg, especially when programs called ME and left messages. I played phone tag for several days last week with a program simply because they are at the top of my list and I didn't want them to get the wrong idea and think I wasn't interested, even though I didn't actually have any questions (and the phone message he left said "please call if you have any questions, I'm offering myself as a resource about the program"). I finally left a message saying, "thank you for calling, I want you to know that I loved your program and I don't think I really have any questions that will change where it is ranked; I don't think we're going to be able to talk because of the time difference and my hours on my current rotation, which is neurosurgery." So, since I strongly prefer to get emails, I sent emails. Less invasive, I think.

Strongly agree with this ^^^. An email is easily read and appreciated or read and discarded at the recipient's leisure. A phone call is intrusive.
