Calling schools that waitlist you

I'm currently on a bunch of waitlists and my friend suggested that I call them asking about my rank and if there's anything I can do to increase my odds. Does anybody think that it'd be a good idea or would that just annoy the adcoms?

Every school I interviewed at said they won't disclose wait list rank if you call.

This is unlikely to change your odds of acceptance at schools with ranked or unranked waitlists.

I don't think this is ever a good idea. What response would you expect? "Oh, we just need you to get three first-author publications, 1000 more clinical hours, and join the Peace Corps. Oh, and we need you to do this by May."

If this is your first-choice school and you would go regardless of financial aid, etc., then you can write a letter of intent. Otherwise, you can still send them update letters re-iterating your interest in the school.

Listen less to this friend, because their ignorance of this process is going to prevent you from being a doctor.

Suppose you call and find out that you're #15 on the wait list. Big deal. That tells you nothing because the Admissions dean has to try and build a balanced class.

Nothing will increase your odds except a large donation check. Schools that are open to updates might appreciate a new semester full of great grades, or a publication. Or seeing you grovel.

I would say though that some schools do encourage it, Upstate certainly being of them, after a certain date. Otherwise unless you have an update or acceptance somewhere else, it's out of your hands. I know it's torture waiting, but it will get here. May is just around the corner!
