Calling UIC

Ok, so I just made a blunder that may cost me admission to UIC. Well, maybe. I called UIC to ask whether a course I'd taken would satisfy the Cultural Diversity requirement. The person on the phone, who sounded like a man to me, said to email [email protected] with the course description so it could be reviewed. I assumed the email address was someone else's b/c it had a female name in it. So in the email I wrote, "I spoke to a man on the phone today who requested my course description..." and the same person I talked to on the phone wrote back saying, "that was me you spoke to, and I'm Ms. xxxxx." So now I feel really embarassed and hope they don't remember this when they review my app! 😱

On another note, any UICers out there who want to say something about their school? Do they typically take many out of state students?

Don't be too concerned. This is probably not the first time this had happened to that individual, and I don't think that the person will remember. At least I hope not.

Yeah I wouldn't worry about it...I am applying there too. Did they say any guidelines of what they consider for the cultural diversity courses? I was just going to put down some I took for my diversity requirement at my current college, Race in America. I assume this course will be ok...Just wondering what they told you!?!

I'm not gonna worry about it, but it was embarassing at the time.

At first I didn't think I had any course that would satisfy the requirement but then I remembered a course I took in French Culture during my freshman year. I just sent them the description from the course catalog and the woman said it was fine. She told me on the phone it could be any "non-Western" course. The course you mentioned sounds like it would be fine too, but you can email them to make sure.

Depending on where you are taking your pre-reqs, UIC will have an actual list for your school that has all of the courses that meet the cultural diversity requirement. There should be a link mixed in with their admissions requirements.

I have a minor in philosophy, but even my "Philosophy of Religion" will not qualify for the C.D. requirement. Instead, I am signed up for "Religions of the World."

The pre-req guide says to refer to the undergrad catalog for the CD requirement.

Cultural Diversity Requirement

All undergraduate students must study a culture different from the dominant American culture. To fulfill this requirement, students must complete one course from a list of cultural diversity courses.

Foreign nationals and students who received a high school education (or its equivalent) in a non-Western country shall be exempt from this requirement. Students may also fulfill the cultural diversity requirement by completing one of the UIC year abroad programs in a non-Western country or the equivalent.

If it fulfills Course Distribution Credit, a cultural diversity course may be counted toward a distribution requirement in humanities or social sciences. Or students may take their cultural diversity course in their majors. Students should consult the Cultural Diversity list at the end of this section of the catalog for a list of courses that fulfill the requirement.

"Race in America" sounds iffy. Definitely double check with UIC. Hope this helps!

Now that I think about it, "Race in America" is definitely a Western course from the "America" in the title. So I would definitely call them but you might have to take a different course.
