Personal goals:
  • practice in CA
  • primary care/work with underserved populations
CalMed/CUSM
+
  • southern california (familiar, less adjustment, better residency prospects in CA)
  • affiliated hospital for rotations (less moving, better clinical experiences?)
  • inaugural class (all schools are invested in the success of their students, but I'd think a new school has a lot to prove)
  • MD (?) (perhaps not quite as relevant given my career goals?)
-
  • private loans
  • experimental curriculum (no cadavers, flipped classroom method)
  • inaugural class/brand new school (lots of crazy to deal with)
DMU
+

  • well established program (good reputation and match list)
  • great vibe/student happiness
  • board pass rates are great
  • low tuition/cost of living (also offered a ~5k scholarship)
-
  • Iowa (not as familiar, huuuuge lifestyle adjustment)
  • risk of not getting year-long rotations
  • chances at CA residencies are lower
  • DO (?) (perhaps not quite as relevant given my career goals?)
Thoughts?

Given your goals, I would suggest CalMed. Since you're not aiming for competitive residencies, then there really is minimal risk with the new school situation, but it also won't close any doors if you do choose to go for something a little more competitive later on.

Mmm in spite of the lack of federal loans and potential for forgiveness?

  • private loans (i'm poor and want to go into primary care, if they don't get approved for federal loans by 3rd year... crippling amount of debt. looking into the school's need based scholarships)

Since you're fine with Primary Care, go with DMU. I'm not a fan of the flipped curriculum (being a dinosaur) and REALLY not a fan of digital cadavers.
