Hey all,

Don't know how well known this is but, Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC is opening a DO school in August '13. They are a very prestigious private school with an awesome Pharm program already.

With that said, does anyone have experience with getting into a newly opened DO school? By the time I can apply it will be a few years old but I'd still consider that fairly new. Are there any major differences in acceptance from an established COM vs. a new COM?

Basically, will it be a good thing that it's new or a bad thing?

Thank you in advance.

LOLZ, Davidson and Duke are prestigious, not Campbell

I'm also interested in this. From what I understand it can be somewhat of a risk to go to a newer school, because there aren't many alumni ahead of you who have "paved the way". However, if you look at the match lists of some other recent schools it seems that newer schools are not necessarily all that bad in terms of opportunities. I'm also interested to hear how much regional preference Campbell is going to have? I plan on applying there this cycle, but I'm from California.

According to their website, Campbell will focus on developing PCP's to serve North Carolina. It would make sense that they would tend to admit students with ties to the state or region, but it's worth a shot.

nothing magic, going to about the same as any other school, just a little easier to get into. probably will help if you're from the area

Duke, Harvard, Yale, etc are on their way out....Campbell University is gonna run the show (be # 1) in all aspects of every field (engineering, science, etc) from next year onwards....and Marian University is probably gonna be # 2.

The sooner you get over their awesomeness, the better it'll be.

Established DO schools will be harder to get into because they will have more applicants and for good reasons. Established DO schools have a proven track record and an alumni base. The more established DO schools have produced generations of DO's. Residency program directors are familiar with the quality of the graduates of established DO schools.

With all the above being said, now I would not want to be anywhere else. I am very happy that I am in the 2nd class my school. For me, the opportunity to help define the legacy of WCU-COM is something special. Now being part of a new school does have its own set of peculiar problems and difficulties. But if the new school has done its job and gotten the right faculty and staff together, (This is where you will need to do your homework on the new schools.) I think it is something that you will always cherish.

Just $0.02 worth from someone who is at a new school

These are all very good points to think about. I wonder how they will view a local applicant on HSCP..

Oh and, I'm not here to argue Campbell vs. Anywhere else. The prestige is there, it's a well known college.

It's a small liberal arts college that probably no one outside of NC knows exists. I think you might be confusing Campbell with Wake Forest or something.

Unless more AOA residencies open up the bottom tier/newer DO schools are going to be lunch meat during residency selections by ~2020. But like I've said before, COCA has its head up its ass and will readily accredited schools without thinking about things like the impending residency crunch or quality of rotations or in the case of RVU the reputation of all Osteopathic physicians.

They have a regional bias for residents and southern states like Georgia and Florida according to their website, so the bias extends to the southeast.

I'm from NC, Campbell is not prestigious, even here. We have Duke, Wake Forest, Davidson, UNC-Chapel Hill - all prestigious and well-known schools. Campbell is more or less a back up school.

Well...It will be #1 in my list when I apply.

I'm going there for undergrad, but at the present I think I want to do pharmacy. If there's one thing that college is known for, it's their pharmacy school.

Be very wary of attending pharmacy school in the future. Pharmacy schools have expanded very rapidly over the past decade. The job market for pharmacists is incredibly glutted, and will only worsen.

The same thing is happening in almost every field in healthcare except medicine...

Definitely. I'm going for a BS in Biochemistry before I apply for graduate school.
