My uncle is an foreign doctor with an MBBS degree. To get recertified as a physician in the US would require more schooling so he does not want to go this route (He is here only so my cousins can go to school in the US, but he will be going back and forth between countries) Is it possible for him to take the exam to become a PA without any further training?

Thanks

In general the MBBS degree is the non-US equivalent of an MD degree. My father is a foreign medical school graduate and opted to go the PA route. He did attend a 2 year PA school. You must go to PA school to sit for their PA licensing/certification exams, no exceptions. It may be easier to gain acceptance to a PA school if you are a foreign medical grad, but you still need to go through PA school before you can take their certification/licensing exams.

In addition to the 2 years of PA school, I had to take college core sciences prerequisites to be eligible to apply for PA school. Took 3 years altogether.

He wouldn't need any additional schooling in order to become a licensed physician in the US. He would probably have to repeat his post-graduate training (residency), but not his medschool. He needs to pass the US medical licensing exam and then obtain a residency position. 25% of practicing US physicians didn't attend medical school in the US.

The PA route requires at least 2 years of additional (expensive) university education. I know a cuban doc who has done this, but that was mainly bc his med-school education was very narrow and he had a hard time passing the USMLEs.
