Can a school view your USMLE scores on their own or do you have to release them?

I'm just curious about this. Obviously you need to report step one to advance etc. But does the school have a way of logging in to the NBME to see your scores, or do you have to give them permission to view them? In other words, must you formally release the scores to the school. Curious if anyone knows. Thanks.

One of our administrators referred to my score before I ever mentioned anything about it -- so yeah, they have access.

wow, that's annoying to hear your score from a dean or something.

Schools have access. It was reported on my online transcript automatically.

I don't know what the big deal is about your school knowing. They know everything else and will ultimately have to write your Dean's Letter having considered your score as part of it. You can't "hide" previous failures either. There is no selective score reporting.

Thanks for the answer, but your extra comments are unnecessary and obvious. Clearly you can't "hide" anything from them. It's still interesting to know.

Why would this be a bad thing? It's annoying to have to release your score--just would add another step in the process.

Lol, how everyone likes to dance around the obvious here...of course if you get a 240 and up you'll be comfortable with everyone knowing...half the people on these forums find an excuse to post their score in a thread so that all of SDN knows. Just like you don't have scores (no pun intended) of the 188-195 range lining up on SDN to tell their story, its quite easy to imagine how these individuals might be uncomfortable with the entire administration at their school knowing.

Anyways..deans at my school knew the morning off the score release.

They are the people who the school SHOULD know about. People with lower scores are going to need much more career counseling, match advice, etc.

You're right. That's independent of the student feeling uncomfortable about their score and everyone in admin knowing about it though.

Because people won't find out they didn't match?

I can understand people being uncomfortable with their peers knowing they did poorly, but if the administration is on board, they can save many more embarrassing moments from occuring, especially ones that would be evident to their peers.

Again, you're right. I totally agree with you. I am merely acknowledging that I can understand some students feeling uncomfortable with the automatic distribution of their scores to the administration, even if it is in their best interest.
