I'm applying this upcoming cycle (2018), and I plan to be in China for all of my summer. So, I'm going to need to be able to submit my primary, receive secondaries, and submit secondaries all in China. Has anyone had experience with this? I could pay for a VPN, but don't want to if I don't have to. Thanks!

What a unique scenario...I would recommend contacting them directly about this if you don’t get the advice here. You can’t possibly be the first person to go through this (...right?), but I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen a thread about it.

If a VPN is really all you need to overcome the "great firewall of China" then you don't need to pay. Windscribe is super easy to use and gives you 10GB/month for free. I'm sure others have similar programs, and there may be some open source VPN stuff out there too...

Does your university offer a VPN? Mine offers a VPN service and you can use it anywhere in the world.

The great firewall has banned vpn. It’s illegal to use vpn to bypass the great firewall in China.

Do you know anyone in China who can try accessing aamc from China?

Hm your university VPN should work. Otherwise try VyprVPN

I've read that free VPNs actually don't work there

I guess I'll check on the banned VPN policy and my school VPN and move on from there. I've also asked someone in China to access my account. Will update on my findings for future reference!

If you are using gmail then you won’t be able to check gmail while in China as access to google is blocked. So try to use a different email address for your AAMC if you’re using gmail now.

Internet speeds were mind-numbingly slow in Beijing, especially with VPN. Definitely use an approved email (I think yahoomail and gmail are banned, not sure about others). If you have mobile provider with no data roaming charges though (i.e. T-mobile), that may be a quick way to get online. Good luck!
