I'm in a Family Medicine program currently in Southern California. I'm really enjoying my Internal Medicine rotation as an intern and the hospitalist life is becoming more appealing to me (something that never appealed to me as a medical student). I'm starting to think that I should have applied to IM programs instead. It's quite difficult to do full-time hospitalist work as an FM doctor here in California.

Is it possible to finish intern year as an FM resident and transition as a PGY-2 to an IM program? I know I would have to make up some ICU and ward months, but has anyone heard of this? I would hate to finish intern year and then redo intern year as an IM resident.. Thanks!

You can be a Hospitalist as a family medicine physician as well.
You can have some elective months later in the Icu or wards if need be.
If you switch, you will most likely do intern year as im again, but it will be easier the 2nd time around.
