can anesthesia procedures be learned?

my concern is that my hands are very unstable and I am scared whenever I am doing procedures... BUT I LOVE ANESTHESIA!!!!!!!!!!.... my question is that with training can I become a competent anesthesiologist despite lack of dexterity???.... or does one need to be innately good with one's hands when doing anesthesia?... can the procedures of anesthesia be learned is basically my question???

Did you learn to write? Obviously you have learned to type... Of course you can learn procedures.

All kidding aside though. It may take you a little longer to get the skills down, but anything is learnable. I mean seriously, they are teaching chimps to do surgery. I'm sure you can handle a lousy epidural needle.

what does unstable mean? Are you just nervous and they shake or is it an actual medical condition? If it is the former you can defiantely learn but if you have physical issues with your hands that could be a problem.

I remembered the first time I supervised a thoracic epidural.... I afterwards found some of the attendings who had trained me and apologized...

I've seen a guy just out of residency that had a problem with lines. He seemed to get most of them in, but he was always sweating, hands shaking the entire time. Made me nervous.

I would suggest aiming for a career in bread/butter cases where you aren't inserting too many lines.

so doing residency in anesthesia does not guarantee that one can become a competent anesthesiologist?... i do not trust my abilities when it comes to procedures, but I was hoping procedures can be learned despite a lack of confidence in oneself

Lack of confidence may be overcome. Fidgeting and tremulous? Not so much. I'm a CA-2, and I'm still not "confident" I'll hit my A-lines. That comes with experience.
