Hi everyone,

I have the opportunity to take a Master's level course in forensic psychology this fall at virtually no cost to me and I am wondering what exactly is covered in these types of classes. Could anyone give me a brief overview of what to expect? I have a BS in psych and have taken a lot of abnormal and psych of personality classes but don't really know what to expect of forensic or if it would be worth taking for me. Right now I am very conflicted about my next step school-wise: whether to finish with my post bac pre-med courses and do the med school route or enter a Master's program in organizational psych and then try to get into a PhD program in organizational behvior or industrial psych. Any comments on forensic psych most welcome. Thanks!

Hi,

I'm currently in John Jay College of Criminal Justice Forensic Psychology MA program. I'll be graduating May 2010, so I've completely most of my course work. Here is a run down of some of the courses i've taken:

Psychology and Law: basically the name says it all. The class broke down the relation of psychology to NY State law, and the laws which psychologists have to adhere to, eye witness testimony, Tarasoff etc

Evaluation of Sexual Offender: the assessments used to eval the sex offender, treatment and rehab offered to sex offenders etc.

Alcohol and Drug Use: the effects of polysubstance abuse on a individual both psychological and medically. Rehab and treatment offered to the users.

Clinical Interviewing: (as it applies to the forensic field)

Psychology of the Victim (victimology): the psychological effect of victims who have been sexual, mental and physically abused.

John Jay was the only Forensic Psych program I applied to, so I am not sure what other programs are offered. John Jay is famous for the criminal justice programs, so this is probably what you will (or should) find at other programs.

Hope this helps!!!
