Hello all, I just have a question that maybe you all can or cannot answer.

Anyways, I am a fairly non-competitive student who does not stand a snow balls chance in hell of matching for a rad/onc residency. (I really don't want to get into it)

But anyways, as I understand, some people become general internist or medical oncologist before going into rad/onc. I would consider doing this, but I ahve been told taht if I do a residency in internal medicine, and then later do one in rad/onc, that my rad/onc program would not be funded and 'd be making $0 per year. Advice from anybody on this?

I haven't heard that. I know many people who were board certified in internal med and went into rad onc. They never mentioned anything about not being paid during rad onc residency (and believe me, I'm sure they would have said something).

I agree. I don't know if there is a rule where the residency won't get funding -- but even if that's true, I'm sure residencies would find funding for you. There are plenty of examples out there of people switching specialties (i.e. finished residency training in one field, but deciding to go back to training in another field), or people double-boarding. Actually, I just had an IM attending who is also a ophthalmologist. I'm sure no one is going back to do a 2nd residency for "free."

thats not the way it works. In fact if you did 3 years of residency in, say, Im you should be funded at the PGY4 year right off the bat. But I woulnt argue if they just gave you PGY2 salary (though they shouldnt).
