I volunteer at a free clinic where I scribe and interpret for Spanish speaking patients. I also sometimes interpret for medical students/residents, but when there are no Spanish speaking pts I still go in and see the pt interaction. I absolutely love this experience and I hope to do this for as long as possible. I currently have a heavy semester filled with ECs, getting ready to apply to med school, & studying for the MCAT etc. However, I do not have any actual shadowing experience, so I was wondering if I can consider some of these hours as shadowing? They're mostly primary care pts.
Thanks!

Also, I have been keeping record of the shifts that are just observing the residents/doctors interact with the patients so I would count these as shadowing hours, I wouldn't double these hours

Just ask the doctors if it’s ok with them in case they get contacted, I can’t imagine it wouldn’t be.

would it be fine to list my volunteer coordinator as the contact reference? I usually just shadow one doctor once since they tend to only volunteer once a month or less than that and I don't get their contact info. There is only one doctor who is employed by the clinic but I mostly just scribe for him.

That should be fine. Alternately you can also list yourself as the contact, just make sure you have the name of the doctor(s) that you shadow and the ability to contact someone if necessary to verify.

I lean that this is more volunteering, and so I strongly suggest that you try to get some honest-to-God shadowing.

Are you scribing the entire time or only for the Spanish speaking patients? If the entire time, I would put that as volunteering and try to shadow a different specialty that you are interested in.

I scribe for most of the time. I think I will look into actual shadowing. Thanks!
