I know I'm thinking way ahead here since I haven't received any news or interview invites yet. But is taking a year off to complete prerequisites (I would only need three more classes maximum depending on the school) a valid reason to apply for a deferral? Most schools require that prereqs be completed by matriculation so say I get an acceptance (praying for this!) could I apply for a deferral stating the reasons above so that everything would be complete by next years matriculation?🙂

Must be that time of year again.

Troll season. I hope you guys have packed away some of that extra apathy and indifferentness, because you're going to need it.

yes you can defer for that reason since you would not have the classes....they would defer you themselves...😀

Fine, I will answer your question OP. The answer is no. You will not get a deferral. I am 99% sure that an admission committee will not give you a deferment year because you did not finish an admission pre-req before the Summer of your matriculation at the latest. They will simply give your spot to someone else. :luck:

If you're three courses short on the pre-requisites, why wouldn't you do those in the spring? Schools offer acceptances UNDER THE CONDITION that the pre-requisites are completed. No school will give you a deferral. They'll just unaccept you and you'll have to apply again the following year.

At one school I interviewed at we even had to sign something at the interview saying we understood the pre-reqs and would complete them on time or lose our spot.

Dont think you will even be accepted without completing your prereq

You can get accepted at almost all schools without completing the pre-reqs, as long as they are done by a certain date or before med school starts. However having more than 1 or 2 pre-reqs not done before application is generally advised against, and is a bad move as far as the MCAT goes.

But how come I've heard some people say "If you haven't completed 1 or more prereqs, the adcoms will immediately throw your application out because it's an easy way to filter out the thousands of applications they get."

That's what I read on someone's post; so what he said true or ..?

I'm wondering myself because I have one prereq left and I'll be taking it the spring quarter before applying, but the grades won't be out before I send my application..

I'm accepted at a top 30 without one of the pre-reqs. Granted, it was Orgo II.

This is correct in my personal experience. At my last interview the Dean of Admissions gave about a 15 minute speech about a girl who was short one pre-req and he said he was heartbroken because the school was her only acceptance and he had to call her to withdraw the offer. Immediately after, he handed out a paper with a list of all the pre-reqs and a statement that read to the effect that we acknowledge that we are aware (1) what the pre-reqs are, and (2) will have completed them all prior to matriculation. We had to sign it and hand it back in. Anyone who interviewed at San Antonio will remember this.

Having said that (curb your enth 😀), you can be accepted (I am short one pre-req) but will not be deferred...they prefer that you reapply the following year because "it isn't fair to the other students who have worked hard to complete all the requirements (dean's words)."

Top 30? I'm sorry but I just had to el oh el. I thought it stopped at top 10 and top 20, but top 30? What about top 40, top 50, top 60? Where does it stop?

You don't have to have the pre-reqs completed when you're applying, but they need to be done before school starts. Most schools won't let you defer for that reason. Apply a year later.

Why not? It's better than saying 30-25, which is basically what it means.

Yeah, I'm really wanting to make it into a top 18 school...because that 19th one will really limit my options 😀
