Hi,

I was wondering if anyone thinks I can get into an allo with a 25. My UGPA is 3.5 from Haverford. My grad GPA is 3.0. My post-bacc GPA is 3.65.

I work full time in the OR now while taking cell bio at night, and have done some interesting free clinic volunteering while a post-bacc. I am also a professional artist with a MA in art history in my past career. Now I do freelance illustrations for children's books on top of my OR gig. I have three children's books that are published--that I wrote and illustrated--and are doing quite well (you can find them nationally at major bookstores). So these are my stats. I think it's just that horrible MCAT that is holding me back. What do you think? Any advice?

I'm also 27 and married and an IL resident. I'm looking primarily at schools on the East Coast, however, like Drexel, Temple, NYMC, etc.

Can I get in allo with a 25? My pre-med advisor says a big fat no. He thinks I have no chance whatsoever.

Thanks,

BB

Your chances are certainly not great. I believe Illinois has a couple of less-competitive stats schools. You should certainly keep those in mind. It is at those point too late to apply for this year, so I would say your best bet is to work really hard and take the MCAT again in April and see how you do. Then, apply early in June next year. Apply to at least 15 lower tier schools, including everything except maybe Northwestern and UChicago in Illinois. Also, keep in mind osteopathic options, as their average matriculant MCAT is ~24, which would actually make you above average.

Based on the MSAR publication from the AAMC, for applicants with your MCAT score, I believe about 75% get in nowhere, and about 25% get in somewhere, so you have a chance, just not a very good chance.

nah, it's late, but not *too* late. However, with a 25 MCAT it would be advantageous to apply really early in the process, so I would recommend waiting until next year. Even if you did apply now, I think you would have a shot given your interesting life experiences and such, but it would admittedly be a stretch. I would recommend applying to ~20 schools. You might also consider DO schools, which would be more forgiving of the MCAT and more interested in diverse experiences.

I guess it depends on how important it'd be for you to apply for this year and whether you have the money to spend with the knowledge that your odds of rejection are relatively high. If you really want to apply now and have the money to burn, go for it, you do certainly have a chance. If you're willing to wait and you're sort of strapped for cash, I recommend applying next June, perhaps retaking the MCAT if you think you could do better.
