I just graduated from college. I am going to a post bac program before i apply to medical school. My medical school advisor said that in case i do not get good enough grades i should consider applying for a do degree instead of a md degree. I was wondering if anybody knows that if i decide to go to a do degree if it is possible to change to a md degree either during or after i finish d.o medical program so that eventually i will be a md.

no

You have a lot of background reading to do, but you've come to the right place.

I also recommend checking out this book (quick read don't worry)

If you want to be an MD then attend an allopathic medical school. If you attend an osteopathic school you're going to be a DO. You don't get to just switch

Here's what you gotta do. Stop listening to your advisor, and apply to MD only in the US or out.

It's obvious that you don't want to be a D.O. and I rather see another premed who actually wants to be a DO get accepted to schools instead of you.

What's the point of going to a DO school if you really want the MD title.

A lot of DO schools are nearly as competitive about grades as MD schools, its the MCAT that greatly differs.

Yes, you can go from a DO to an MD degree. Once you complete your DO degree, just fill out this form, and you can start the wheels in motion to get your MD.

The process takes a while, but it is actually pretty straightforward. Good luck!

Newsflash: there are only 10 or so hippie tree huggers who want to be DOs so they can treat the whole patient. The rest choose it as a US MD backup (no shame in this, just be up front about it) or because the school is geographically preferable.

You guys laugh but I really wonder if anyone has been crazy enough to do this....

If so I'd like to meet the biggest douche in the world

If the OP is serious....you can try to transfer after 2nd year, but I think your home town has to be close to an allo school and one your parents has to be pretty damn sick....or you can get kicked out of your DO school and Ross will take you. Telling ADCOMS you think OMT feels good, but you just don't believe it won't work.

Actually for me, my physician mentor was a DO who went to PCOM, he was the one who inspired me to become a physician and a DO at that. I think his letter got me in.

By the way, I'm not a hippie tree hugger. Sorry to burst your bubble. Those people creep me out.

the rest choose it as a backup?!?! i completely disagree. i remember you saying this previously once too. you posted you dont believe in OMM and that you basically lied your way through adcoms saying you believe in it and the DO philosophy. personally, i think youre full of crap and would never trust/want you as my physician... but thats just me.

I don' t get it.....where do people like this get off....getting on here and posting questions like this? Do you not see this is an insult to all those individuals whom have chosen the DO route? "Well lets see...hmmmm....if I don't get into med school I'll just apply to a "second rate" school as a fall back plan...yeah that's it.....then switch, what do all of you guys think that have chosen this route as a career think?.........GO MD....if you even have doubts....and don't ask stupid, degrading questions like this on the Osteo Forum....👎

"...if it is possible to change to a md degree either during or after i finish d.o medical program so that eventually i will be a md"

No. The answer is absolutely not. Like the others said, you've got a lot of research to do before you think about applying, not to mention research about osteopathic medicine. DO's can do almost anything that an MD can nowadays and it's the mentality of people like you who unfortunately keep us from progressing.

Do us a favor and if you're only applying to become a DO because you think it's "easier", don't. Only those who truly wish to study osteopathic medicine deserve to be accepted in to the limited spots available.

Good luck with your endeavors and please do some more research here on the forum. Best of luck.

ROLMFAO!!!!!!!!! And the new ignorant premies roll in.

It is possible to transfer to an MD school if you are enrolled in an osteopathic school. The transition sometimes sets you back a year/puts you at a disadvantage. It's similar to the students who transfer from caribbean schools to us schools DURING medical school. Once you graduate you will be unable to transfer, but you will be able to apply to MD schools and earn the degree that way (a less than desirable pathway imo).

Be careful mentioning DO or MD in the same sentence on these forums, butts tend to get hurt really easy.

Since it's one of your first times on SDN, I'll let this one slide. Bobby, you come off as ignorant about the degree. Before you apply to MD or DO, I'd do some research around SDN to try to get a feel for what the DO degree entails. You'll find out that essentially medicine in this era is just medicine, there are no real differences in philosophy with all DO graduates "viewing the body as a whole instead of just organ systems."

You should have asked your pre-med advisor this question. I know osteopathic school representatives visit undergraduate schools, so ask your advisor if there is an event coming up. Maybe you should sit in and learn a few things about osteopathic medicine.

I was inspired when PCOM's Dean of Admission's (Deborah Benvenger) gave a mini-lecture/overview of the DO philosophy, history and OMM at my school which led me to do more research on OM (there isn't much of a difference versus an MD. they are treated equally but personally I think DOs have more perks 😉).

Bottom line, do your homework. Just because you have a DO attached to your name doesn't make you any less of a physician than a MD is.

Also remember that most advisers have no clue what DO's are. I posted a little while ago but mine actually told me DO's don't do 3rd year rotations at real hospitals. I didn't know there were fake hospitals. Just keep in mind that your best bet for learning about DO's will probably be from SDN or those representatives that come from the school. Pre med Advisers are mostly 👎.

Not to be a killjoy, but with so many naive pre-meds around here, do you think it's wise not to do one of those "sarcasm font" thingamabobs with a post like that? God knows how many people read that and thought "sweet! I'll be an MD after my DO!"

You guys are leading this guy astray. Transfers are EXTREMELY rare and they're usually reserved for people who have some family issue in a particular geographic location or have some other kind of hardship, not because they want an MD instead of a DO.

Second, I don't know of a single allo school who will take someone who has already graduated from medical school. Why would they? Spots are limited and their goal is to increase the doctor population. Why take someone who is already a physician and allow them to take a spot from someone who wants to BECOME a physician?

Not all. My advisor also informed me about DO. His grandparents were one of the first few DOs who graduated from A.T. Still at Kirksville. He's a pretty old professor from MO.

Who cares? Anyone who is that stupid won't get in anywhere anyway. And if they somehow make it that far, they will fail out. And on the slight chance that they actually make it through, they won't care about trying to turn their DO into an MD anyway.

I went to a doctor a few months ago that transfered from NOVA to Emory his third year. I wouldn't count on it though. Just apply and see what happens and go from there.

I agree.

If someone is that gullible, they shouldn't be getting a professional degree and putting patients at risk anyhow.
