Hypothetically, would this be poor decision? Would I get judged?

What about a pony tail? :shy:
Yea, just like Clay would be fine (in my book)...I'm out in Cali, residents wear nose rings...I've also seen nurses with purple mohawks (culture of acceptance/diversity)

There have been a couple guys with long hair in my med school (one with ~shoulder length, a couple long enough to do a little bun). It was fine M1/M2, but they cut it in time for rotations.
Dumb question, but why do you have to cut it for rotations?

Because your preceptors will grade you. In theory it should be on objective factors, but the grades will be based mostly on their perception of you. Introducing behavior or appearance outside of what is "expected" could potentially bias the preceptor in a negative way.

Can confirm one of the joys of having long hair as a male is tucking it behind your ears. I miss my long hair.

There was a dude with full jesus hair and a huge beard with a butterfly of a personality at one of my interviews and he got into a couple schools back in November, so I don't think its an issue lol

Your time for looking like a weirdo is m1-m2. Your time to look like a weirdo is not the interview cycle or M3-M4.

Anyway, I was playing with the idea of growing a patchy beard and having long hair. Why not? I literally am just doing whatever I want at this point and having a good time. I'll just have to get my GF to learn to love it... A tough sell, no doubt.

Although I was pretty homely when she met me, so it must not be the looks keeping us together!

it's dat sweet sweet future doctor money

I'm not cutting my hair till I start year 3, but come clerkships, I'm cutting it and shaving. I can look homeless for step 1 prep. You will be judged and evaluated on your appearance, not only by attendings, but by patients.
