Hello!

I just recently completed my certification to become an Advanced EMT (AEMT) after having my basic certification since 2020. I am just now applying for jobs as an ER tech with this certification, and will hopefully have one that I can at least include on my primary before the end of the month. However, throughout my advanced EMT course, I had the opportunity to do about 30 hours of rotations at a very rural emergency room in Georgia, where I was able to observe the doctor on call and support the nurse on duty, while also performing my basic clinical skills for observation/critique (vitals, IVs, blood draws, IM injections). I also was able to spend 12 hours "shadowing" at a pediatrician's office, and another 12 hours at an outpatient spine center, where I was able to help ventilate the patient during surgery and learned a ton from the anesthesiologist. I also did 48 hours on an ambulance with paramedics, but am more so interested in being able to speak about these hospital/outpatient experiences.

My question is, even though these experiences took place during my course, can I somehow include them in an activity entry on my primary application? I had a ton of fun during these rotations and would love to be able to discuss them on my application, but obviously I can't refer (and don't intend) to refer to them as volunteer experiences.

What is your opinion on whether or not I can include these? And if so, in what fashion?

Note: I do have other clinical experience as an EMT-B and as a hospice volunteer, but those were much less specific and more limited in what I could do.

Thank you in advance for any advice 🙂

Probably can include it if you want in your PS. Maybe an edited concise version as MME or separate activities (if more than 50 hours). What do your pre health advisors or career advisors suggest?

I was thinking I could have one activity listed as something like “AEMT Clinical Training” and then discuss why it was meaningful as an MME. I’m a 2020 grad so my past advisors aren’t exactly super eager to help me (nor were they really when I was still in school) unfortunately, so I tend to seek wisdom here sometimes.

Thank you so much for your response!!

Would definitely try to write something down. Don't throw away too many details that you cannot include in the MME; they could help you in a later essay or interview.

That’s a great thought! I’ll definitely hang on to some pieces that I can discuss elsewhere. 👍🏻

I think that's fine. You may tag the AMCAS Activity as "Other" since "Volunteer" and "Employment" don't apply. I suggest the title of the space be more specific, like "Advanced EMT Clinical Training." Anything that was pure physician shadowing can be included with your other Shadowing activities, taking care that those hours won't be double counted.

That is a great suggestion! Yes I will definitely be sure not to count any hours twice. Thank you!!
