I recently received an acceptance to an Osteopathic Medical school. After consulting with my some of superiors I decided to defer it and go for MD. Anyways I mention this because I feel like i'm getting awfully close to becoming a physician. Anyways do I have to agree with everything the textbooks say? I'm still not completely sold on HIV causing AIDS. If you understand basic Microbiology it makes for an interesting discussion. Ok, so a virus invades a host cell in order to replicate. In response your body releases Antibodies to help track down and rid the body of the virus. In essence once your body releases antibodies you have become immune to the virus. We once thought the world was flat and if we traveled too far out we fall in. There were many that asked, "what if it was round?" These guys were laughed at and sometimes even prosecuted. What are your thoughts?

As with life, you should always keep an open mind. However, there are certain things you need an expertise on before you can just go around claiming what you want. A pre-med should in no way (imo) be allowed to say they're "not completely sold on HIV causing aids." What credentials do you have? Have you done extensive HIV research? Do you have a doctorate in the field? Unless you do, you're no different than one of those crazy conspiracist anti-vaxxers in my opinion.

Were you also accepted to an MD school that you could choose over the DO acceptance? Or did you just decide against DO and try for MD in the future? If the latter, I think that's a poor choice. You're not necessarily guaranteed acceptance to an MD school.

the latter. I'm rolling the dice but i'd bet on myself any day of the week.

And then you proceed to question if HIV causes AIDS. You are not close to being a physician; you have yet to begin medical school, and if you cannot see the relationship between HIV and AIDS, you will flunk and you will flunk hard.

I think this should be the centerpiece of your next application.

Honestly, we really have barely scratched the surface of understanding here. This is certainly true with regard to how the immune system operates. If it were so straightforward, we wouldn't have so many disturbed or malfunctioning immune systems and goofy autoimmune diseases and presentations.

So how much hard core research have you invested in this?

Good thinking on choosing to go MD because DO isn't real medicine school.

I'd like to ask you one question do Retro Viruses kill Host cells?

Sorry. You don't get to answer a question with a question here. Are you serious?

Oh but to answer your original question re: can you keep an open mind? Um, I would dare say, probably not.

Im waiting for the credulous pre meds to give their heart felt answers.
