can I list activities from right before freshman year?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I even listed some things from high school. Significant achievements at the national level.

I also included an activity that I did for my entire senior year of HS and also my entire junior year if college.

Did you list middle/elementary school activities when applying to college?

I wouldn't list activities from high school unless it was a national honor or something you had continued to do through college with the same organization.

So high school Model UN Club would NOT be listed but college Model UN Club would be.

However if you've been volunteering with the Detroit chapter of Habitat for Humanity for the past 6 years, I'd list the correct start date and # of hours. This is an example where one can have worked with the same organization for many years.

The point of the activities section, as it was explained to me, is not to fill up every slot with random activities. No one is going to have every slot filled. It is to showcase what you have been passionate about and involved with while you were in college.

I'd recommend only listing it if your high school activity continued into college. I don't think that even major high school awards like ISEF should be on a dental school application.

Update: found this on the ADEA website --
"You may include activities from college (activities from high school are not acceptable)."

Well that answers that question. 👍

Instructions for academic enrichment:
"These experiences can occur in high school, during college (frequently summer programs), or as post-baccalaureate programs. Examples of Academic Enrichment Programs include the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) and post-baccalaureate programs."

Instructions for awards:
"The purpose of this section is to highlight any special accolades you have received. List awards, honors scholarships in order of importance to you. You may include awards, etc. from high school and college, but keep in mind that college accomplishments are given higher priority by many admissions committees."

One thing that I included from high school, for example, was that I was the valedictorian. I also won first place in a national competition and included that (I actually won it more than once).

Ironically, I did include something from middle school for the "academic enrichment" section. It was a major national ranking and something I dedicated many years of my life to--and that activity majorly shaped my life's trajectory and made up a huge chunk of my personal statement. So, I thought it would be really weird not to include it... and it also didn't hurt that I clocked over 2000 hours in preparation for it!

I included a work experience that occurred during high school. It doesn't instruct against it, and I had the space for it.

LOL, did I come across as snappy?! I didn't mean to! I'm just wanting to spread good info! 🙂

The quote I referenced was in the context of the Extracurriculars/Volunteering/Community Service section, because that's where most "activities" as per the OP's question are classified under.

They don't really care about the ECs you did during high school.

But if you don't have much of anything else, you might as well put it on.

I know--but I think Baba Yaga believed that it covered everything, and I wanted people to know that high school stuff was only explicitly prohibited in one section. 🙂 You also said that you wouldn't list major high school awards, which I disagree with, but who knows!

Oh I said that because I the OP was talking about activities and this references activities specifically, but yeah that's great to know about honors and academic enrichment.

I definitely think you were right in listing national awards on your app! 🙂
