Something I've been working on during my gap year plays a big role in the diversity I have to offer medical schools. When I have these two essays for the same school, I describe the project in-depth for whichever comes first. To avoid repeating myself, can I just refer back to my project?

I don’t think you should write both essays about the same thing, but if you must, never say “see my previous essay!”

Oh no. If the gap year essay comes first, I would describe the project fully and then refer to it and then write about how it contributes to my diverity.

You can't assume the same reviewer will be the screener for both essays.

So I need to spell out the experience for both essays because schools often send one essay to one reviewer, so reviewers rarely have access to the complete set of secondary essays for one applicant?

If you have to do all that and the same person does read both essays, you are back in the same conundrum. Write about something else…

I can't. My gap year activity is big to my goals in medicine and my diversity.

You won't know which schools sort Secondary essay evaluation by splitting them or lumping them. Or if that's their common practice, or if it's a new policy.

I'm sorry but I agree you need a different subject. By luck, you made a Mac and Cheese dish where you had to highlight pasta, and the next cooking challenge wants you to spotlight cheese. You don't make the same dish again.
