So I am planning to send my transcript as soon as the application opens up (May 1st).
But do I have to fill out the application first (classes + grades) before doing so? Or can I just send the transcript first and then do it? I heard that it takes them about 4-7 days to receive the transcript, so I guess I can do it during that time?

If you're asking about AMCAS, it's fine to have the transcripts sent in early (as soon as you have an AAMC ID number and can print the AMCAS transcript request form). Though you can start to fill in the application sooner, you can't submit (and pay for) the Primary until June 3. AMCAS will hold the received transcripts until they see your money.

When you fill out AMCAS and when you send in your transcript are unrelated events (besides that you'll need to make an AMCAS account to send in your transcript). However, if you submit your application, it will not be processed until your transcript is in. It is a good idea to send it in early because it takes a couple days for AMCAS to process it and there are some horror stories of AMCAS losing applicants' transcripts.

Agree with the above. Allow ample time for processing. Side note -- also take into consideration how long it will take your school to mail your transcript. There are some horror stories of schools misplacing transcript requests.

And there are some schools that won't honor a transcript request until the current term is completed (if you are on the quarter system). So know what your school's policy is.

Please send in transcripts the second they come out. AMCAS is a god awful system and you want every leg up. I sent mine in May 12thp

you get an aamc id as soon as you take the mcat, correct? i took the mcat last summer but am applying this year. Does that mean I can send in my transcripts right now?

From the amcas website... they will start accepting transcripts the day the application cycle opens so May 1st

More like ~10-15 days. I paid extra for next day delivery of my transcripts but the difference between my tracking order saying they were dropped off and amcas actually acknowledging they had them and associating them with my application was 13 days.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I already graduated so, I can send my transcript whenever I want.

So, I can send the transcript on May 1st regardless of whether I put classes + grades in the application?

BTW, if it takes a while to get mailed to AMCAS, then can we just mail it at the end of April?
That way, they will probably receive it in the beginning of May.

You won't have your amcas id and you need to print out transcript request forms. So May 1st is the earliest

With AMCAS, transcripts don't carry over from one application season to another. Perhaps the transcript request forms have the year mentioned, so they won't be confused from one year to the next.

isnt the number same as the last year?

Also, I am not planning to send it with the request form as it is not required.

Sending it with the transcript request form will help ensure your transcripts are matched to your application in a timely manner... or else you may have your own horror story to tell 🙂
