I was released from my hospital volunteer program today due to a violation of phone policy. Can I still include these hours on my application? If yes, am I obligated to include that I was released from the program on AMCAS?

Volunteered for this program for 200 hours for about a year and I have learned a lot about patient care. I want to talk about my experiences, but I am not sure if including these experiences would also require me to include that I was released from the program. And if this a negative (small or big, and hopefully not lethal) to my application.

Should I ever bring this up?

More on the violation: checked my mcat score on the floor and was reported by staff member.

Sorry, I am still shocked from the meeting I just had. I just need some advice. Will probably delete this content later.

Thank you.

You can still put them on your application, and you aren't required to stay why you stopped volunteering at the program. However, you are required to put contact information to the program and if a school wants to call them to see what they thought about you there isn't anything stopping them. The stoppage could also come up during interviews and you'd have to have an answer prepared for that kind of situation.

You got dismissed for checking your cell phone?

It's a little excessive for a first offense, but it is generally against policy to check your cell phone on the floors (especially if you are a volunteer). That's why you have to check it when you're in the restroom or away from public view, or at least that's what I did when I was out and about in the hospital.

The one I was at was really relaxed then. Small community hospitals are like that I guess, not many volunteers, lax restrictions.

ehh i volunteered at a major NYC public hospital, all the volunteers were on their phones the entire time, all the techs were too. Noone gave a ****

Thanks for the input! I do hope this is a small impact on my application if I am asked about this. I think being honest and just telling the interviewer about it would probably be the best idea. I do find it unfair as I do see other staff members using their phones on the floor.

Sorry to hear of your troubles, Lardy, but this is a teaching moment as to why it is important to follow very simple instructions.

You knew about the policy? You don't have to be in the CIA to know how to use a cell phone discretely.

As far as reporting it: don't ask/don't tell.

They made it clear that phones are not allowed on the shift. I assumed I was fine if I was checking my mcat score, but I guess not.

How would a patient be able to tell you were checking your MCAT score and not doing the other hundred things one can do with a phone? Don't make excuses, you messed up and got burned for it, just learn from the experience and move on.

I'd still include it on your application since it seems important to you, but remember as mentioned earlier you'll need someone to list as a contact for this activity. It's very unlikely they will ever be contacted but there is always a chance.
