Hey SDN,

I am a freshman at UC Berkeley. I had a really bad first semster and end it up with a 2.1 GPA becasue I got an F in Calculus. I am now retaking the class, and so far, as of the grade report I was given, I have a solid A. I am also taking English, Organic chem, and biology (plant). The problem this semester is that I messed up really bad on my first midterm for orgo and got a 48/100 (class avg=74) I still have another midterm and a final worth 200 points. Should I change the class to pass/no pass instead of a grade. The class is not curved and I do not know if I can get above 90 on this upcoming midterm. Will medical schools look down on a no pass? As you can tell, I have been having a very BAD first year due to stress and problems at home. I am a URM if that helps later on.

I still have to take physics, Orgo 2, Calculus 2, and General Biology

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You can still get in with the F, especially provided its replaced by the C coming from averaging it with an A on a retake. A no-pass (NP) may as well be a D/F, so it will be seen as such. P/NP grading is usually used to make a passing but not stellar grade like a C more vague, and doesn't fly with prerequisite courses. If you do change Orgo to P/NP, be sure you pass, and know you'll have to retake it for a letter grade for med schools to accept it.

You won't be able to average the A and the F to get a C. You have to report both the F and the A separately when you apply to medical school. Your school may let average or replace the grade, but AMCAS will not. The good news is the A shows that your capable of doing well in the subject and you can explain that you were having personal problems at the time. Stay away for P/NP because it won't count for a pre-req at all. if it was me I'd no the best you can then retake over the Summer as to not slow down your progress.

stay away from p/np, and you are urm so you are all good. Just don't mess up the rest of your classes. At that point, you'll need to try for DO or PA if you still want the physician route.

And, important, doing well in your bio, phys, and chemistry classes will be a huge help for your mcat. study for understanding best you can 🙂

Med schools need letter grades in pre requisite classes. You could retake and DO schools would replace the lower grade so you should apply to them. People have gotten into MD schools with F's before so it's not out of the question. But at the same time be realistic and consider all those other pre-meds that never got below a C that you are competing against.

Go ahead and apply to some MD schools when it comes time but you should probably focus on retaking the classes and replacing the letter grade for DO schools.

What would you do if we said you couldn't get in? *stay with me*

All that said, most of it is kinda premature since you a freshman. Do extremely well for another two years and then we can talk. Have another semester or two like these and you should consider your answer above.

Uh, AMCAS definitely averages the two grades for calculating one's GPA.

Going the PA route to become a physician? 😕

You are taking a really tough schedule.. Have you talked to BSP advisors?
