I think I can, but will I get in?

See, here is the deal. I am a junior and I have a 2.7. I may be able to graduate with a 3.0 or so if I am lucky. So lets say I have a 3.0 GPA for high school. I am taking the ACT's and SAT's senior year and studying over the summer for them.

http://www.uky.edu/Admission/transfer.htm

That is the link to the transfer office at UK. I am an OOS applicant from New Jersey. If I went one semester to my local CC for half of freshman year, what are my chances at getting in for the second half of freshman year? I know I am allowed to apply but it says that I would need:

1. Application for Undergraduate Admission
2. Test Scores: Official results for either the ACT or the SAT I

3. Transcripts:
1. Submit a complete official high school transcript including the date of graduation.
2. An official transcript must also be submitted from each college or university attended even if no credit was earned.

4. Non-Refundable Application Processing Fee: Attach $50 in cash, check, or money order made payable to the University of Kentucky.

I mean, none of this seems like a problem. However, I am just asking this because since my grades were so bad (even though I am improving and it will show), I am just wondering if they will look at my transcript and say "Oh forget it"

But my cousin said that won't happen because he goes there and has friends that did the same exact thing and said that they only need the transcript to make sure you took the classes you needed to take (Foreign Language), and that UK is not competitive so as long as I have like a 4.0 by the time first semester is over I should get in easily.

Does anyone know how the transfer process works? Why do they want my high school grades and everything? Will being an out of state applicant at a community college looking to transfer there after the first semester kill my chances? How do I know what my chances are? How is this determined?

I'm so confused....

As a general rule, they want you to finish up your general ed requirements before transferring unless you're 110% sure of your major.

If you try to transfer before earning enough credits to go in with junior standing, they'll place heavy weight on your high school record.

Really? Someone I know got in after just one year and another after just a year and a half and both of them did poorly in HS (worse than me even). Just saying. My major will be chemistry.

Is it generally easier to just get an associates, nail as close to a 4.0 GPA as possible and just apply for that years fall admissions?

See, the thing is, I am worried that if I do 2 years at a community college, I will get into the colleges I want but I won't get into medical school because I wouldn't get to take part in any clubs/research and stuff.

And what is a semester hour?

Would 24+ semester hours mean a year? What would less than 24 be?

Help...

On the bright side, my parents would be able to pay for at least half my Med School tuition, but now I do not even now if I will get in because I am starting out at a CC. ughhh

I can't help but feel you know the answers to all these questions and just want your nerves calmed.

Check the uni's website. The school I'm transferring to requires 30 semester hours to transfer based solely on your college transcript. If you have 29 or less they make you also send a copy of you high school transcript and ACT/SAT grades. I' sure it's slightly different for all of them though.

If I were you I would just take a full year at the CC and work on keeping your grades up. In college you can't afford to get more than one or two C's. They will ALL be questioned down the road.

EDIT: I just noticed it's already been established they require 24 hrs. That is not an amount you can take in one semester you're going to have to stay a year 🙂

Well, from what I've been reading on SDN, it's possible to get into medical school after starting out at a community college. As long as you transfer to a university and do well there too to show that you can handle the coursework there, you should be able to get in somewhere...

Ok. Yeah, I kind of figured. Could I put in that many hours in a year at the CC?

Yes, that would only be 12 hrs per semester. A bachelor degree is 128 minimum hours (at least here) so if you divide that by 8 (semesters) you get 16. That means you need 16 hours per semester in order to graduate in 4 years.

That makes sense. Alright, I'll do 16 for a year (two semesters), then apply the fall of the year when I complete my freshman year at CC right.

Aug 2010-May 2011=1st year (32 Semester hours)

August 2011, start of second year, I will start applying for transfer slots at the college I couldn't get into during HS 😀.

Is this how it goes? And what about UK, how would I be able to get into UK? Would I have to do the whole associates degree? UK doesn't accept winter transfers...

Your year at CC would consist of one fall semester and one spring semester. During your spring semester you apply to go to the uni your following fall semester.

Oh, so I would do my half year in 2010, then towards the end of my first year in 2011, I would apply (and hopefully get accepted, lets use UK as an example), and attend that august or w.e?

But wait, when I apply would I put down that by the end of may 2011 I would have completed 32 hours? Just saying, because any hours over 24 do not require SAT/ACT scores
