Rounders last week...I played some hold em and made some money. I wonder how many of us are good poker players, you do have to be pretty chill to do well.

Pfft, my 100 shares of ISRG is gonna pay for the aps. I have a hunch its going to go through the roof solely because I bought it.

How about blackjack? If you go to Vegas, I heard the payout at The Palms is ridiculous....

better odds with hold em

Come on people, gambling is a zero sum game, while the stock market is looking at a rally after Wednesday.

Why are there the same 5 guys in the world series of poker every year, it is a skill.

Also, the stock market doesn't work for people without the cash. Hell the stock market doesnt work with this economy. I remember Michael Moore wrote that the stock market is a lot like vegas, rich man's game.

Yes, the world seems quite in tune with Michael Moore these days, and i know for a fact that everything he says is true.

hold em rocks! That and Blackjack are the games of choice at the casino

Hell, it seems like you could play poker with admissions too...but I don't know if I'd have the guts to do that

My game of choice is Roulette. I kick @ss on that game.

That just isn't correct - the only guy from 2003 WSOP final table that made it to the 2004 final table was Dan Harrington. Moneymaker and Farha were both gone on their first day of play. I do agree that in the long run, poker is a skill, but at any given event, there's a significant luck aspect. I mean, think about last year. Moneymaker got very lucky (remember the hand against Ivey where Moneymaker caught the A on the river to catch the bigger boat? and he won a number of those coin-flip hands [overcards vs. under pair]).

The difference between the pros and the rest of us are their instincts. Anyone can go all in with a nut flush or know to fold 8-4 offsuit, but the pros seem to know when their K-10 is good and, miraculously, when their opponent has reraised him and has A-10.

Ok, that's enough poker pontificating for now... man, I can't wait for ESPN to start airing the 2004 WSOP!!!

Don't let odds fool you.......have you ever played hold 'em at a casino??? It's crazy my friend.... Much different than home-games. You better have the nuts to toss ~$50/hand to make it to the river, and chances are your great hand is **** compared to everyone elses. WHen everyone's playing for money (and a lot of it), everything changes. However, playing in tournaments is a bit better than going to a poker room alone. DO you hold 'em fans have pokerpub at your town???????

Hold 'em is great...won $60 bucks this weekend....I guess that would pay for a secondary =) I hope I find lots of med students who will want to play poker with me 😀

the odds are only good on poker and blackjack if you don't make many mistakes. and just a couple of mistakes/hr can kill your odds in blackjack.

I wouldn't play hold em' at a casino because the casino takes a cut of every pot. I rather organize a game with my friends, that way if you lose you know the money is going to your friends and then you can get them to buy you beer

I don't play at the casino, always with my friends. Moneymaker was lucky, but he had to have had some natural talent...maybe he can easily catch someone's tell? I usually can buy a lot of pots out, as long as I keep my betting random, some people just don't have the balls to stand up to you.

As for the admissions process, I would sit down with my 17 schools in hand and bet away, you can't win if you don't put out on the table. Everyone says it is a crapshoot, I think it is a poker game...you can influence your odds a little. :luck:

90% of the top 60 in every WSOP (and final table at the WPT) gets there by being all-in with marginal hands at least once (usually several times), facing elimination with like 8 outs. It is a matter of skill to get to that point; luck certainly takes over for a second there, but then it's right back to skill to decide what to do with the newly acquired chips.
