I recently turned down an interview very nicely, and the PC thanked me for notifying them promptly. Then, a week later, I get an email from the same program (via myeras) saying they cannot offer me an interview because "the applicant pool was very competitive" and I "did not meet their requirements."

I thought nothing of it, at first. I thought maybe when I canceled the interview, I was placed in the "not interviewing category" and got some automatically generated email. Then, I noticed the date on the email was November 2nd. A day after they get our MSPE letters. Now, I have nothing but good comments on my MSPE. However, my class ranking leaves a lot to be desired. I am probably in the bottom half of my class.

Maybe I'm being too neurotic here, but I wondered if there was a connection between the program getting my MSPE and then sending me a rejection email. I am kind of worried because I received a lot of interview invites before the MSPE letter came out, and I was feeling pretty confident in my app. Now all of a sudden, I am wondering if they are getting my MSPE and wondering why the heck they are interviewing me...

This is probably an ERAS email mixup. They probably don't have a separate checkbox for "dude turned us down" vs "not interested", or they got mixed up, and you got the rej letter. Don't sweat it.

To answer your thread question, it is "no" about 99% of the time. ERAS is glitched this season it seems.

Quit worrying. You turned them down, and then you got a rejection. Either way, you're not interviewing there... so it doesn't matter...

Let's be clear -- there is no glitch in ERAS. It's working just fine.

The glitch is in how people use ERAS. It's really easy to send an "we'd love to interview you" email to everyone who applied with a click of a button. Any email program can do this. Every year, some program screws up and sends a blanket accept/reject email to the wrong list and then has to backtrack/recind/etc.

Agreed. See UCLA this year.

Be happy that it's only happening in the interview phase. 5 years ago (has it really been that long? Damn!) the Urology Match got completely hosed such that Hopkins grads w/ PhDs, AOA and 270s on all 3 steps went unmatched while Carib grads who could barely find Dominica on a map were matching at Duke and BIDMC.

There are humans involved in this process...sometimes they F things up. Get used to it now...there will be humans involved in pretty much everything you do from now on and, I promise you, they WILL F other things up. You'll get hurt a lot less if you roll with the punches.

During my match season, I got rejected from a program, then got an e-mail explaining that the rejection was an accident (withdrawing the rejection), then got an e-mail withdrawing the withdrawal of the rejection, and then an e-mail withdrawing the withdrawing of the withdrawal of the rejection. At that point I promptly scheduled and completed my interview within 2 weeks, before I got another e-mail saying that I would not be interviewed.

/didn't rank it highly

I have a lower than zero interest in urology, but that's kinda scary to hear. What happened to the Hopkins people? And did the Carib people end up staying at the program they 'matched' into, or did they e-mail people the next day saying they screwed up?
