Can Residencies give you Gift Cards?

Residency gave me all of us a 50$ gift card in our goody basket. This seems highly irregular and i didn't think they could give us something of monetary value (in before people break down the semantics of 'monetary' like everyone has a law degree).

IDK, I'd be fairly content with the gift card. They could've just given you pens they got from the GSK pharm reps.
