Can schools access your Facebook if it's private?

Im in pharmacy school, (I post here because some people at my school lurk on the pharmacy forums), and today we had a lecture on professionalism, including social media content.

The professor had a pp slide of some of my classmates' Facebook cover photos, and lo and behold, mine was on there! (and no it wasn't a picture of me, and no it wasn't anything inappropriate, although some of my buddies looked over at me when they saw it) But my Facebook profile is private, even if I google my name, my Facebook page doesn't come up. How did my professor access my profile?

When Facebook introduced cover photos a few years ago, it was tacked on rather than integrated in. As such, most people didn't realize that their previous privacy settings didn't apply to the cover photos album. Even now, I'll be looking for somebody, and if their profile is private, I can still see the photos in their cover photo album.

I'm pretty sure there is no option to make your current cover photo or profile picture private any more (only past cover/profile photos can be restricted from public viewing). Basically if you have a cover photo, anyone can see it by searching for your profile and there's nothing you can do about it.

Yup, this. Just make sure you never pick anything for your profile pic or cover pic that you wouldn't want non-Facebook friends to see. Pretty much everything else can be locked down. Also, be careful about accepting certain friend requests.

Well, several students were not admitted to residency programs and medical schools based on their so called private Facebook info, so take that for what it is. This info is from deans and program directors. Furthermore, students have been kicked out of med school as well! Facebook is not worth ruining your career...in my opinion.

Regardless, you shouldn't be putting anything on SOCIAL media that you're not comfortable with the whole world seeing!

They probably didn't know how to properly set their FB privacy settings, or didn't know what was visible to the public. Like OP not knowing that your current cover photo and current profile picture are always public.

Also you can search for people via email address, so even if you change your name, if you use your main or school email address, people can search that way.

its just fear-mongering from faculty to get kids to take their privacy settings seriously. they exaggerate insinuations so that the students take them seriously and actually lock their stuff down/watch what they post so you don't see stuff like " news at 5, XYZ school medical student writes that diabetics are wastes of space," or something like that.

It has been said before here, but if it is online, it is public. I don't care what you're privacy settings are or how old it is. You can assume that it can get around.

The public schools have filtered internet - can't access your Facebook or any sites not approved for children also. if it's private there are other ways MSpy Facebook tracker, faceves.com and etc
