So apparently I am accepted into my "worst-case" scenario school. Let's call this "School D" So here's what's going on:

I am currently waiting to hear back from 3 schools in which are higher choices than "School D."

School D faxed me a letter of Payment Agreement, stating on how I would like to pay for school. i.e. 12 payments or bi-annually. This is past due to turn in, and I just got the email today.

So school "D" states that by signing this agreement, it supersedes my deposit and I am liable for all charges related to my account, including the 1st year of tuition, if I am to withdraw my application.

So I am in a little predictament at the moment. School "D" tuition for 1 year is $26k, and I would not want to owe a school that money, especially if i withdraw early to go to another school. What I am wondering is, can a school actually do this?

(And if I am withdrawing, I plan to do it by mid May. It's not like I am gonna wait 2 weeks before the semester begins.)

Thanks for the help!!

Never heard about anything like this. Are you sure you're liable for the whole year's tuition's worth or just the deposit?

ive never heard of such thing, its always deposit first, if u dont go, u lose that, but essentially telling you that you will owe them 26k 4 months before school even starts sounds a bit off to me

Are you sure you're reading that right? It just doesn't make sense. Maybe you should post the document (of course blur the name and school) and see if we can make sense of it

is this school accredited? be careful if it's a new school that isn't accredited. Because I've never heard of any school saying something like this.

Honestly, if i were you, i'd get the advice of a lawyer. if you're signing something that says you're expected to pay a lot of money like $26K, then it's worth it to pay a lawyer a couple hundred to advise you. it's an investment in the long run, just cover your butt as much as possible.
I don't know how much lawyers cost, but would you rather pay a couple hundred, or 26 thousand dollars and drama and even more lawyer fees.

Thanks for the input. Maybe I am reading it completly wrong and will post the document later tonight to see what you all make out of it.

The school is candidate status, so it should be accredited in two years as they say.

Anyway, thanks again for the help!

So I called the school and the director said once you sign the agreement, your liable for the year's tuition. What sucks for me is this school is the only one I've gotten into and I'm waitlisted for another, and waiting to hear back from two others. I don't want to take to chance of losing my spot in this school in case I dont get into the others. Then I dont want to sign this and be liable for 26k for not even attending the school.

He did say that if there is a family reason or medical reason, you can petition the charges. So my intentions where to go with it and somehow try to get out of it if I can.

Anyways here is a copy of the form.

Any input will help! And I wonder if this is legitimate?

(sorry for the blurry wording..could only fit 400x400 as an attatchment)

Wow that is SHADY!! These new schools make me sick... seems like more of a scam then an education. I would only sign that if I was 100% sure I wanted to go to that school. Sorry that's a tough situation

King, IMO, that is pretty shady. I don't think I would do it. If you don't get off the waitlists, can't you apply again next year? What school is this?

Wow. That's incredibly ridiculous and sounds totally shady. Imo... I would think long and hard before signing an agreement like that. If there is any chance of you getting into a school you actually want to attend, don't sign it. What the hell is the point of paying a deposit if they make you pay 1 year tuition too. You're essentially paying a $27k deposit to hold your seat......

yea it is pretty shady..

Really don't want to post the name of the school in case they can somehow track me..but yea it is a new school. I'd be the third class.

Thing is, I've just recently had a death in the family, so as much as I would hate to use that excuse for not attending, I'm sure I could. Possibly could say something like my family is not ready for me to leave them, yadda yadda.

But yea, the agreement was due on April 2nd, and they said they forgot to email it to me, and emailed it last week. So, I'm sure I can wait a few weeks to buy some time.

Thanks for the replies. That was my first response to that letter as well.

How the heck are they going to "track" you? Tell us the name of the school so we can drag its name through the mud :meanie:

Sorry to repeat what others had already said, but the school is shady. Please tell us the school, so the future generation can avoid it. This is a trap!! Whatever you do, don't ever sign it! I don't think u would be happy going there, knowing that they're doing it just for the money.

So I have an evil plan. Open new pharmacy school, accept students with 2k deposit, hire the worst teachers. Students must sign tuition form, will get kicked out of school for whatever reason. Man I will be super rich!!!!!

If you really want to know, just figure out which school's tuition is $26,960, or $27,960 assuming the $1000 deposit, whatever. There's not that many candidate schools, should take you 10 minutes. And that is both some shady crap and agree with the concern that they also will be able to figure out who he is already if they are reading, which they probably are.

Sounds kinda shady to me but honestly i've had classmates how have been accepted to nearly all the pre-canidate school (cept north cal state) and they didn't pull stuff like this. I honestly think you might have gotten a letter that got mixed up and misteken for a deposit. that letter sounds like something a early decision person would get since early decision has to accept in exchange for having their stuff looked at first. but even under those circumstances that still is very crooked and kinda underminds ppl going to that school if thats honestly how that school operates

No, it was not a mistake. The school name is Union University, a candidate status school, in TN. I had to sign the same form a while back. I recognize it.

If that's so, I think they are taking the old Christian adage "It is more blessed to give than to receive" a little too far...

Just pay the deposit if you really want to join this school. Another thing in mind is that is this a new school, if not than try to contact any P1 or P2 students for inside info about the school.......Just Be careful👍👍

Id weigh your chances of getting into the other schools. If you think you have a good chance, Id ignore that letter. Its up to you.

Its bad enough that I believe some schools purposefully accept students extremely early in the process then collect deposits before an individual's true choices are known. Late April though...you should know where you stand....

that's pretty nasty even for a diploma mill.

They cannot charge you full tuition for class you will not attend.

They can keep your deposit if you decide not to attend, but there is no way they can take 26k from you for a year of school they will not give you. It even says in the letter if you default, you will not be allowed to go.

If you feel strongly about attending this school, pay the deposit. If you are accepted elsewhere, don't pay the tuition. Of course, as others have suggested a lawyer should be consulted. Wouldn't take long. Also, 26k+.. does that make it the most expensive pharmacy school in the US?

Personally, I'd refuse to attend a school like this, but I understand that last ditch feeling.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not a lawyer, this advice should be taken with a grain of salt, and professionals experienced in the matter should always be consulted further.

I'm sitting and reading through this thread, and it's making me so mad. I'm not even sure how this school even legalized this. Under no circumstances would I ever send in my deposit or any other form to this institution. Seems like a money pump, you'll never be treated as an individual there. If I were you, I wouldn't even reply to this mess.

Thing is, I paid the deposit back in December, when I found out I was accepted.

I already have a lawyer taking a look at it for me. I mean, I paid the deposit for a reason...why should i be charged this insane amount if I do not want to attend..

And on price, it is a private school, and there are many many other schools that are more expensive than this one.

Thanks for the advice.

Just looked at their website. The tuition amount doesn't match up to the number on that sheet. And overall, it just looks like Jamestown II.

I go to a private school as well.. it's still pretty damn expensive.

kinda interesting they are already talking about payment plans way before school is starting... shouldnt it be about how to get financial aid?

and you said they "forgot to email you this agreement" until after you paid your deposit, and my guess is by paying that deposit you have agreed to an agreement that you never received... thats totally not legit lol, you can probably take them to court if they end up charging you 26k, just save all your emails/communications just incase

SHADY!!

It's not only SHADY ... It's SCARY... Oh my!! Why the heck would I pay that amount of money and I am yet undecided?!!

Yeah this school is trying to earn some extra cash form innocent students...I don't know whether they can legally bind a student into paying 26K. Some one should report this school to ACPE for investigations.

Jamestown, as in the original settlement of Virginia in 1607?

OR

The People's Temple Argicultural Project (aka "Jonestown") Guyana 1978?

No problem. Might I interest you in some Kool-Aid? 🙂

It was actually Flavor-Aid 😉. And to the OP, that agreement is so screwed up, that even if I didn't get in anywhere else this year, I would probably wait one more year to try to get into a different school than go somewhere that treats their students/applicants like this.

Cool avatar.

Wow this school sounds sketch!

I would stay away!

Wait list sounds good, maybe you will get lucky. If not, try again next cycle. Many schools give people who apply a 2nd time more clout. And if this place is in TN, i know UTN gives 2nd applications more consideration.
