I've read several posts mentioning that they realized it'll cost the same to attend Hopkins or Duke than UC's. Can someone explain this? Were these people non_CA residents considering to attend CA or in-state?? I thought in-state resident tuition was really low? Does this only pertain to JHU and Duke or other private schools?

thanks! 🙂

I dont know about JHU, but Duke has this thing called the Duke Grant. This supplies alot of non debt funding to students. Also, because of Duke's unique curriculum the third year is a year of research and oftentimes students get scholarships for this year, so the third year is paid for. The average debt at private schools is about 116000 or something and its only 68000 at Duke

Depends on the private school... Duke and Stanford are very similar in that they have very large endowments that they can use to offer students substantial grants and scholarships. In addition, both schools have somewhat flexible programs (the research year at Duke, the 5-year plan at Stanford), that enable students to qualify for additional funding via research fellowships, TA-ing, etc. Thus, some of these private schools are able to offer financial aid packages that will undercut the standard package from a UC, despite the low tuition there.

From this book I read about JHU, the school is pretty good with meeting the financial needs of all the accepted people. I also heard that they have so much money floating around that last year the dean even "toyed" with the idea of getting rid of tuitions once and for all. I guess it is a perk that comes with being one of the best medical schools. 🙂

wow, imagine how many more applicants they'd get trying to go to med school for free.
If not free, they could surely subsidize a portion of the cost ala Mayo Clinic.

The concept for paying $4900 /yr to get an MD, let alone from Mayo, boggled my mind. Doesn't boggle anymore since I already got turned down by them 😉

yeah, JHU has alot of money. probably donated. they share with their students.
