Can someone please tell me something about VCU? I have been accepted there but am thinking between going there vs. going to Tufts, or BU.

If I go to VCU, would I have a good chance of specializing? Is Richmond a racist place (it was the capital of the confederacy!!)? Are students happy? Is it a diverse campus?

By the way, VCU will cost me 212,000 and Tufts will cost 288,000 over four years.

Can someone please tell me more about this school? I have a decision to make which really will affect the rest of my life !!!!!

Thanks!

Its a good program but the equipment, buildings are really old. Richmond isn't anymore racist than the north from my experiences. The school produces good dentists and living in Richmond will be way less $$ too in addition to the cheaper tuition.

Hi Dr. Taco,

Thanks for replying.

Would the old equipment be a big problem? I have absolutely no idea about that.

What is your experience with racism in the North? I live in New Jersey and there is absolutely zero racism that I have ever seen. I did live in Northern Florida once and it was (like Georgia) a very racist place. I felt disgusted at the way whites thought they are better than blacks. Even if they didn't do anything racist, I could see that they thought they were superior. I am not white or black, but it pissed me off nonetheless.

Old equipment isn't really a problem at all because no matter where you go chances are what you learned on will be outdated by the time you are out. In my experience the more rural an area is usually the more racist it is (my hypothesis to this is that these individuals are not exposed to different cultures very much). For instance racism in Atlanta and other large cities is WAY lower than out in the sticks (i.e south rural Georgia, rural north florida), and having lived in virginia I can say the same applies to Virginia. Guys its important to understand that racism can happen anywhere. Honestly i'm really tired of people saying oh the south I went there once on a trip in 1962 and I saw an act of racism so that means any state below the mason dixon line is racist and dangerous to live in 🙄

PS: How could you see they thought they were superior even if they didn't do anything racist 😕 .

PSS: Have you ever once set foot in Georgia and personally observed an act of racism?

First of all thank you very much for answering my questions.

Secondly, what I will be saying is my personal experience and is in no way a generalization of affairs in the South.

I have not lived in a rural area, but I would still agree with you that they are probably more racist.

I did not go to the South on barely one trip in 1962. On the other hand, after growing up in Connecticut, my parents moved to Tallahassee, FL when I was in High School. It is a city and not a rural area by any means but is not as big as Atlanta. Tallahassee is way up in the panhandle of FL and not even close to "real" FL. The people there seemed completely non-Floridian (no cubans/beaches/hot as hell weather), and seemed more Texan/Georgian type of place. What do I mean by that? First of all, people there had a heavy Southern accent when they talked. Unlike most places in US, kids thought they sounded cool when talking in a Southern accent. Moreover, most people were very fat - football player type. The women were fat as well. In my high school, with sharp contrast to Connecticut, way fatter chicks were considered "hot".

The first day I arrived to FL, I was taken aback by an experience I had with my guidance councellor in high school. Prior to this I had absolutely no experience with racism, and I used to think that it is a thing of the past. There were a few black kids in my class in CT, and they had absolutely no differences with white kids. Well, in FL the guidance councillor in school wiped the phone with a tissue paper after a black kid used it and made a face as if she was disgusted. He had left the room before that. This was in the presence of a bunch of white students.....and then she asked me "Do you like black people?". I was shocked to say the least!!!!

How could you see they thought they were superior even if they didn't do anything racist

Well....First of all white kids would hang out with white kids only. ABSOLUTELY NOT ONE white kid had a black friend. There were some "wiggers" and of course other whites laughed at them. But not one mainstream "cool" white guy in his right mind would have a black friend. Sharp contrast to NJ/CT/NY.

Interracial couples were NONEXISTENT. You would think that in a high school where 400 kids were black and 700 were white, there would be 1 or 2 interracial couples. NOPE!

When white kids talked to blacks, they were very arrogant. The body language was not friendly one but one that looked more like they were trying to show "who is the boss". Just the way they would stand - with head stretched up high and body all tight. Furthermore, I felt that Blacks there were used to years of being treated like crap, and when they talked to whites, they would be more respectful than normal..... 😕

When a white guy walks into a store, the clerk would talk with respect, occasionally laugh, and talk more with him than a black guy. Very different from North.

This is what I have personally seen in NJ or CT of years of being here (AND yes I do think that these represent the North): There are many blacks guys who are friends with white guys. I see WAY more Interracial couples. Whites are not arrogant to blacks. And sure as hell, if a guidance counsellor dares to wipe the phone after a black kid has used it, SHE WILL GET HER ASS SUED BY THE WHITE KIDS STANDING IN THAT ROOM, who will undoubtedly let the black guy know what is going on.

Please dont think that this as an attack on the South or anything like that. I respect people from the South and the North equally. I just may not like some aspects of their behavior. Also, it is a typical misconception among people in the south that there is racism all over America SO IT IS OK FOR THEM TO BE RACIST. In psychological terms this could be called self justification because by blaming others we just shared the blame and somehow reduced it. Sure somene can dig up news and articles about racism in NJ, NY, and CT; but on a day to day basis, I felt these areas are way way better than Tallahassee.

Well i've lived in Georgia for 18 years and i've never seen anything like what you've described above (however I don't doubt it exists in rural areas -- like the one you grew up in). Also I lived in Virginia (1 hour from richmond) for 4 years and I can say I saw nothing racial and the area I was in wasn't the largest town either (fredericksburg). Ultimately to me it sounds like you'd be happier at tufts or boston.

Hi Dr. Taco,

Thanks for replying!

If that is the case then it is unfortunate because it's gonna cost me an extra 80 grand. 🙁

By the way Tallahassee is the capital of Florida, where Jeb Bush the governor lives- and where Katherine Harris the FL supreme court justice and Republican campaign manager decided the outcome of 2000 presidential elections. Are you sure it is a rural area?

Furthermore, I completely hope that my experiences were non typical !!!!!!

I have also had problems in the south. A few years ago I was driving with my family down to Florida. We stopped for dinner in a diner somewhere in Georgia. When the maitre d' saw that my father had a "chai" necklace (a jewish symbol). We were told to leave because "Our kind are not welcome here." When we drove back up to New York, I was not allowed to use a bathroom in a Virginia gas station because I had the same necklace. I am sure this is not the mentality of all southerners, but it has kept me out of the south ever since.

That's terrible. I cant even imagine that ever happening in NY or NJ. A restaurant like that will go bankrupt from all the complaints and lawsuits filed against it....

honestly... all of this is shocking!! we should all end up in the wonderfully liberal state of Massaschusetts! 🙂

Surely, I would love to do that, but that would cost me a minimum 70 grand extra in tuition and expenses 🙁

I've got an idea. Instead of a discussion here, why don't you actually visit Richmond (and its surrounding areas) again and see for yourself. The cost of the trip is minimal compared to the possible savings.

Just curious... what would make you so concerned about how each city would compare in terms of being racist or not? Whether it's Tufts or VCU, I am sure there would be those few bad apples who would do things to tarnish the school's ivory tower image. I second DrTacoElf that you make personal visits to those places. Walk around the neighbourhood and the campus and talk to current students (of your culture/race/ethinicity). FEEL it for yourself. Be free to decide.

On a side note, I've been to VCU and I loved the city and the campus. It's a very pretty place. The staff were very nice and hospitable. However, my friends who have graduated from VCU have vowed that they would never go back. Apparently, the school's administration is kinda pre-historic/neo-cumbrian era efficiency. A lot of students failed to graduate in time due to this and the paper work just killed them.

I'm sure Tufts would have it's share of horror stories....

One of my best friends from undergrad is from Richmond. In fact, his dad is a professor at VCU! He is acutally one of the most liberal, tolerant people I know. When I told him about this experience, he was shocked. I know that this is an isolated incident, and that this is not representative of the entire south.
I don't think you understand my point for posting this incident. Being a victim of racism is one of the most heart-breaking, upsetting, and offensive things that can ever happen to someone. I try not to let this experience could my judgement about southerners, but it was a very profound experience for me. I don't plan on go back there, but I that is my choice. I posted my experience because I wanted to let people know that this happened to me, and that it may be something you need to be aware of if you are going to school there.
If you are applying to VCU, please take DrTacoElf's advice and go visit the school. I didn't mean to anger anyone, I wish everyone luck in finding the right school for them.

Hey, my question earlier was directed to the OP, zipkosuks. I wasn't trying to make your earlier post less significant by asking the question why racism was a main concern in choosing a dental school... I do understand.

Hey BlueToothHunter ,

Racism is not my number one concern. I have been accepted into a bunch of schools and I have to make a decision where I will be for the next four years (maybe the rest of my life). My experience with racism in the South was bad, and I am confident that if I get accepted to a Texas school, I wont go. But Richmond is right in the middle. I just wanted people's opinion about everything related to VCU (not just racism). I have the option to choose now....I wont have it for the next four years!!!

Dr. TacoElf,

You are right about me visiting Richmond. I will go there this weekend and see what the city/school is like. I will talk around (just like I did at Boston).

Edknarf,

Being a victim of racism is completely not fun!!!!!

Thanks to all for your input.

Just curious why would you apply to schools in the south if you don't plan on going anyway?
