You guys I have a problem that according to advising "only the dean can solve." The other day I was checking my transcipts and notice my gpa just dropped. An "F" for a one credit class that I never signed up for or took just appeared on my transcipts. I'm worried about this impacting my scholarships for this upcoming year the most seeing how they are making decisions in a few short weeks. I have been given several numbers to contact the dean and no one ever picks up or responds to voicemails. I have even been by the office and no one is ever there and I was told he does work in the summer. Any ideas what I can do you guys? My gpa dropped from a 3.85 to a 3.76. Thanks in advance for any help

It might be difficult considering it's the summer. But at my undergrad the Dean was the only one that can approve grade changes. It'll probably be a beating to get in touch with him, but it's probably the only thing you can do.

Sounds to me like a problem that only the dean can solve.

yea i figured that.. i guess I was just hoping there would be a quicker solution than just chasing him around. Thanks though

I have the same problem, easier solution. At my school we have what is refered to as the Office of academic achievement. They can fix it, but you get a W

Don't be afraid to raise your voice. You won't be taken seriously unless you convey seriousness. I would go in, and kindly demand an appointment with dean.

Really a "W" even if I never signed up for it or paid for it? I guess thats better than nothing however I'm not sure if we have something like that at my school but I will look into right now. Thank you!

See the problem with that is, I've been to his office five times and NO ONE is ever there. I almost feel like he doesn't even exist  lol. But you are right. I have one advisor telling me she is going to "raise hell" for me but so far she hasn't been able to get through to anyone either.

That's ridiculous, I wouldn't stand for a W when you didn't even register for the class. Deans work full time, they don't just take the summer off. Go to the dean's office and politely ask for an appointment. Explain the situation. Ask them to look through the records and find where you registered for and paid for the class. When they can't find those records, ask them to drop the class from your transcript.

My thoughts exactly but finding someone to talk to is the problem. No one is ever there or picks up the phone. I've left messages after messages and my advisor has sent emails and left messages as well. This looks like this is going to be a lengthy process however I'm nervous I will miss out on scholarships because of this.

Yeah advisors will say whatever you want to hear to get you out of their office. If you want something done right, do it yourself. If no one is there, slip a note under the door. Get it in their head that they're not going to get rid of you until they take care of your seemingly miniscule issue.

IMHO, most pre-med advisors are people that wanted to be doctors but didn't have the grades, and instead became advisors to live vicariously through their students. There are some great advisors who are very helpful, and many who are former doctors themselves, but it's not like someone grows up determined to be an advisor.

if you are rich, hire a lawyer to write them a letter
if you are poor, write a legal sounding letter to their office...at least thats what i would do.
some of these people wont lift a finger until legally threatened.

Defintely not rich hence me wanting the scholarship lol but thanks i get what you are saying

1. go in your school directory
2. find emails for advisor, dean, student affairs, president, student billing / FA, registrar, etc
3. email: lay out your due diligence. tell them you expect resolution with in 10 business days: the class is taken off your record with no bad marks for you as you didn't register for it, etc.
4. ???
5. profit

I'll leave a note today and see if someone responds. Thanks

Go in with a bat and start busting up the place. I'm betting someone shows up.

If you want something done right, do it yourself. It's ridiculous how the administration can make such a mistake.

Good luck to you.

Does your school have an appeals process? I don't think just the dean can take care of it... there has to be someone in the department the course was offered in. Contact the prof. They will tell you what happened. Do some detective work and see how that happened.

Best advice ever. Don't trust someone to do anything for you. I had to sort out transcript stuff once... Over the phone... complete duds. I physically drove 4 hours to my university and waltzed into the student records office and dealt with it then.

Can you try talking to the registrar? Something sort of similar happened to me. I dropped a class well within the normal add/drop period, but it somehow didn't register, and it showed up on my transcript. The registration department was able to look through my registration history and verify that I dropped it at an acceptable date. Maybe your registrar department can look through your history and verify that you never actually registered for it? And then THEY can get all up in the dean's face for you? Good luck.

As far as I been told only the deal can appeal/remove grades. I'm doing a bit of research right now using some of the advice given to me from some of you guys. Its just hard to get answers when no one talks back to you.

I did talk to them and they sent me to advising who sent me to the dean. There are no records that I even took this class or paid for it so idk 😕 it doesn't even show up on my summer schedule. It seems that I just keep getting the runaround

Just wanted to say good luck OP. I hope you work this situation out; it seems very unfair and poorly timed.

hey you guys, just wanted to update everyone who gave me advice on this thread or wished me luck. I finally got ahold of the dean and met up with him today (though I practically had to stalk the guy). Long story short he realizes that "F" is an error and told me it would be removed. However it would take 2-6 weeks 😕 ? Nonetheless beggers can't be choosers I suppose so I'm happy that it will be removed. Thanks again to everyone who tried to help.

👍

The registrar can move slow as balls, though 2-6 weeks seems a little ridiculous. When I had a similar problem it only took about a week to go from requesting the grade change to my transcript being updated.

That's great!

Just remember to keep on checking with him periodically for updates and to make sure that he isn't sitting on it. You don't want to find out after the deadline for scholarships that your dean put your grade change request to the side and completely forgot about it.

ain't that the truth. Hopefully, if I'm lucky I will not have to wait that long.

thanks, will do! I actually just got notified that I recieved 2 interviews thus far for scholarships next week. If the "F" is not removed by then do you guys think its necessary to get signed documentation explaining this was an error and it will be removed? Or perhaps just explaining it will do?
