I saw this on a website regarding converting Canadian university grades for US Med Schools. Does anyone know if this is true? And, for example: if I have let’s say a 77 in some course, does that mean the U.S med schools will take that as a “B” when calculating my GPA? Thank you so much

**Ontario to U.S. GPA Conversion**
Grade Scale U.S. Grade
A+ 90 - 100 A+
A 80 - 89.99 A
B 70 - 79.99 B
C 60 - 69.99 C
D 50 - 59.99 D
F 0 - 49.99 F

Not sure about how Canadian schools grade but I do know that usually in the US a 77 is considered a C.

At my school
90-100 = A
80-90 = B
70-80 = C
60-70 = D
lower = F

I know that some schools do +/- and that others have below a 70 being an F and above a 93 being an A.
I don't think there are any US schools that consider an 80 an A.

49 and BelowF

The above are how AACOMAS interprets the scores from Canadian applicants. But this does not stop individual schools from evaluating it in their own manner.

My only big question is what makes Canadians with lower objective scores/letter grades get a nice boost to their GPA upon verification by AACOMAS? By no means am I complaining, but I just wonder what makes this happen, it can't possibly be because the content is more difficult.
Maybe Canadian schools don't tend to curve, maybe Canadian marking is just tougher, either way, but who knows?

Does anyone have thoughts?

I am from Ontario. My gpa from UofT was 3.92, but on AACOMAS it showed up as 3.98. I was shooked to see that they considered anything above 80 for me to be 4.0.
From UofT as well, aren't we just supposed to input the letter? 80% is an A- for UofT so shouldn't that be a 3.7?

Thanks

That's what happened on AAMC for me (80 = 3.7). But, Aacomas did it differently. I might be wrong actually, so I will recheck it later..
Yes please check because that would change my gpa by .2 (got a lot of 80s)

Not applying to DO schools (going into veterinary medicine this fall, but thought this was interesting).

I know that here in Canada classes are rarely if ever curved. That may play a role. I for example never had a class or exam curved.

It may also be that an A- in Canada is equivalent to an A in the US based on how tough the courses are or something.
