Hey guys I'm wondering whether its ok to include travel as part of the extracurricular category. I’ve travelled extensively to over 20 countries with around 12 of them being trips I did on my own/ backpacking -without my family’s support. Traveling has always been a very important part of my life and I have chosen to make it a priority; backpacking on the summers instead of taking summer classes for example. I feel I need to explain that, but I'm not sure how to go around entering the hours or anything … has anyone else included traveling on their application?

It's a valid hobby, so why not? Honestly when it comes to hours, go ahead and estimate/guess. Last year I might have put something about traveling abroad but I don't remember if I was required to put down hours or not.

I mentioned extensive travel in my personal statement briefly, but didn't put it in experiences. I used to buy plane tickets to countries with nothing planned and used couchsurfing.org extensively. You ever use couchsurfing? Such a cool site!

I think it would be alright to put it there, why not?

Yes, I’ve met some of the most amazing people in the world thought couchsurfing! I used it to travel through Europe and South Africa. Wish I had a couch so I could host and return the favor, but i'm still living at home 🙁

Why not? I think it's interesting, and anything that's interesting and makes you stand out in a good way is worth adding; even if it's relatively minor. I think it also implies a global perspective that many schools would find desirable.

I used it throughout Europe as well, but I never had the opportunity to travel through South Africa.

I bet that was a very interesting and cool experience.
