i asked this on a different forum. anyway, are you throwing money away by applying to JHU if you don't have research experience?

According to the latest MSAR, and another source, research is not necessary for consideration for acceptance. In fact, proven academic competence, previous activities and achievements, unusual talents, strong humanistic qualities, demonstrated leadership, and creative abilities are sought. Note the absence of any specific reference to science grades and science research! You can believe them!

Besides requiring the standard year each, with lab, of general biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, general physics and calculus, 24 credits in humanities and social and behavioral sciences are required. No P/F grading in these courses, nor may CLEP credit be used to satisfy required courses.

Proficiency in use of computers required.

FYI: "Qualified foreign students receive final acceptance only after establishing an escrow account acceptable to the School of Medicine that is sufficient to meet all tuition, fees and living expenses for the anticipated period of enrollment. This amount is currently $180,000."

Financial aid is not available for such students.

The 2000-2001 first-year class was drawn from 7,058 applicants, of which 715 were interviewed. Class size: 120

Tution for that class: $26,500; students fees: $2,630.

No! Research is not a requirement to get into Hopkins. While it is true that many (most?) of the people in my class had some research experience before coming here, there are many people who have none. I think students at Hopkins come from diverse backgrounds and have a range of different experiences, and research should not be considered a requirement for admission.

If you end up at Hopkins, and you are interested in research, the Dean will fund a summer project after your first year (for which you can receive elective credit). Faculty members will do cartwheels to have a funded med student working for them. 🙂

If you have questions about Hopkins, please feel free to e-mail me: [email protected].

Cheers,
