Just curious.

A friend of a friend is a US-IMG. (I swear, it isn't me) 2 questions.

Can he/she apply for military residencies, specifically for the navy?
If they can, is it extremely hard to land a FM/IM residency spot assuming you don't do a gmo tour?

Thanks in advance!

He/she/you would first need to receive a commission into the Navy. They'll make sure you get to where you need to go. However, don't think they accept MDs from non-US med schools. Again GMO tours are for medical officers- not civilians.

It's not me. I swear. 😉

I forgot to mention that he/she did ROTC . So he/she was in the military before hand. After completing rotc, he/she then went to medical school in Eastern Europe. Can they apply for military residencies?

Thanks.

No - but they can do a US residency and get board certified and then join the military. It's been done before.

No, you're required to have attended either a US DO or US MD school. Also, it has been discussed here that the military match doesn't really have any particular bias for either MD or DO and that it is based on merit.
What, really? I spoke with a girl that was a ROTC cadet and now graduating med school. She said that if you're MD you pretty much get any residency match you want over the vast majority of DO students in the military.

You mean USMD vs DO?

Based on personal experiences posted here, it seems like military match is fair. Maybe this is one of those correlation vs causation, more MD applying than DOs, thus high acceptance of MD into the military match?

Honestly have no idea and I'm only a premed. All I know for sure is it's better to go DO for military match since IMGs can't participate.

IMG always gets the end of the stick... That is so unfair👎

Your friend is misinformed. MD students do not just get any match they want in the military. Many do match their top choice and some don't. Just like many DOs get their preferred match and others don't. DOs have been over represented in mil med for years. We have made it into every specialty and every rank. DOs do just fine in the military.
