I was wondering if one can consolidate students loans while in medical school. I was told that you couldn't because it would put you back into repayment...then why can't you just defer since you are still in school?

Does anyone know a way around this, as I have been told that people have consolidated while in school. These low interest rates are truly amazing, and I would hate to miss out on consolidating at 4%. Thanks, Crypt

You can consolidate and then defer.

I'm considered an "Old Borrower" and consolidated recently. The consolidation resets my internship/residency 2-year deferment. After consolidating, the status of my loans were changed to repayment. Then I applied to deferment.

This would apply to you as well if you're a fultime student.

Just be sure to read the fine print and make sure that you don't lose your grace period and that it doesn't throw you into repayment early. That would be a bad thing!😉
