Can you do this with a Residency in PM&R?

So I'm interested in working on prosthetics limbs I've been interested in this since I was a senior in undergrad. I was going to go into nerve reimplantation but I thought that I would only being able to help patients with a large amount of disposable income.
However I saw a video about a man in china who built his own prosthetic hands link and it re-ignited my passion that I might be able to do this again.
So my question is: Is such a thing possible/realistic? I'm already a fourth year and I'm going to be applying to ERAS soon but I feel like this is something can fulfill me on multiple levels.

I've spoken with Kuinek a few years ago via email link and he made it seem like it's possible.
Also my hospital only has 2 PMR docs on payroll and they closed the residency program recently.

sorry if this has been answered I was searching the forum and didn't a thread addressing this.

Thank You

Your post does not specify what you are looking to do. Are you looking to treat patients with prosthetics? Yes, we do that all the time.

Are you looking to design prosthetics? Biomech engineering would be better.

Agree. if you want to make prosthetics go a different way. If you just think prosthetics are cool and you want to be the doctor for people with prosthetic limbs, that's definitely one of the standard areas of PM&R. You can be very involved in selection of prosthetics (ie writing a prescription for the components) and troubleshooting of the fit and function. Or you can defer the more technical aspects to your prosthetist if you wish. Sounds like you would want to be more hands on.

Definitely choose a residency with a strong O&P teaching focus. Some of the smaller programs will pay to send you to a course if there isn't strong teaching at their site.
