As far as their products are concerned, all biosynthetic reactions in living cells result in

A. a more ordered state, therefore a decrease in entropy.
B. more ordered state, therefore an increase in entropy.
C energy released in the form of ATP

D energy made available for motion.

E a more ordered state with no entropy change.

First, I though that biosynthetic rxns tend toward an increase in entropy, then by looking at the options none of them apply to that. What is the difference between A and E???

The answer is A.
Thak you

A make sense only if you consider "More order" and "less entropy". but..I don't understand it either..

second thermodynamic law states total entropy of universe is continually increasing....

Its all biochem.... We are highly ordered creatures. So if we become more ordered, the the disorder in the environment that we create with our reactions out weigh the order inside of us. Any yes more order = less entropy.

Hmm... all i can think is that....

Reactions often occur when the resulting state is more ordered.

A reaction is spontaneous because it goes to a more stable, Ordered, state. In living systems, only spontaneous rxns can occur without the help of another reaction to fuel it or a catalyst.

The products, the actual products themselves, result in a lower, decreased entropy. They could not occur otherwise. Biosynthetic reactions occur only if they are spontaneous.

BUT, you are right. The entropy of the SYSTEM aka universe, will ALWAYS increase. It increases due to, for example, the increase in +enthalpy of the reaction.

So... it's a trick question. We assume it is increase in entropy, but they are asking about the PRODUCTS, not the system. I would have gotten it wrong, too, had the other answer choice not been offered!

I don't get it. so you are saying that even though HUMAN become more ordered, total disorder of the universe will not be effected???

He is saying universe will always increase in order.

Even though we ourselves become more ordered within us, it does not compensate for how much more disordered the universe gets.

It's like saying...
our disorder might decrease x

but the universe order will always increase more than x to compensate.
" the the disorder in the environment that we create with our reactions out weigh the order inside of us"

OK thanks. so basically we just have to know that all biosynthetic rxn in living cells result in more ordered state.

one more question.. is it just right for humans?? or all living organism?

what the.. i thought spontaneous reactions have +ve deltaS.. therefore an increase entropy...

if u are saying the products have lower entropy than the reactants.. deltaS would be negative.. and that would make deltaG positive..

no because the overall entropy of the reaction is still increasing. the Q is referring to the products only. And living things tend to go toward more order.
