I'm a Canadian university student in third year, with GPA around 3.8 (if I drop the lowest year, it'll be in the 3.9's). I plan to apply to Canadian and American medical schools.

I understand that American medical schools have earlier dates for applications. I am retaking my MCAT in August 9th, and I am not sure if the release date of the scores thereof will be early enough (especially because it's a rolling admissions process). My previous MCAT was 511:129/124/129/129 and I don't think the CARS score is good for most Canadian medical schools, but since American medical schools are more holistic and I have good EC's and GPA, I may have a chance at them with this score; my background is also part Puerto Rican and part Cuban (but also part Polish) so they'll probably give me a URM status.

So is it possible that I apply through AMCAS to several American medical schools with a 511 MCAT score, then retake the MCAT and receive the scores in September, and apply with these newer scores through OMSAS to Canadian medical schools?

Thanks

Holistic does NOT mean they will hold your app until the later score comes in; you will get screened on the basis of your first score.

So if I submit my MCAT score around next week (when AMCAS opens) to the American medical schools, but retake the MCAT in August and get the new score in September, they will ignore the latter and look at the former score?

Better watch out for the CARS section. What did I write above??????

EDIT: Very few international go to MD schools in the US...generally they are superstars or went to the UG school of the med school.

Your chances are fine as of right now for the ~14 DO schools that take internationals.

We are under no obligation to wait for a subsequent score and may well screen your application based on the first score.
On the other hand some schools may have the desire and capacity to wait. There is simply no way to know which is more likely, though.
This is only one reason that you should not submit an application without an MCAT score consistent with success.

@Goro @gyngyn Let's say OP gets waitlisted with his old score. If a spot opens up, what are the chances that schools would look at his updated MCAT?
It varies by school. There is really no way to predict.
A strong primary application is always the best strategy, though.

A close friend of mine had this issue. Majority if schools did not look at the new mcat so beware.
